Book Description

7 Jun 2009
The timeless classic on drawing human figures is back! Following impressive runs by Sterling s previous editions comes a new, redesigned version of George W. Bridgman s landmark work. It combines six well-known books by the celebrated artist and lecturer, who taught figure and anatomy drawing for many years at New York City s Art Students League. This edition preserves Bridgman's lessons and original sketches, but now features a nostalgic, eye-catching cover that distinguishes it from the competition. In its sleek new format, this comprehensive guide will certainly continue its reign as one of the premier figure-drawing publication of all time.

Product Description

"...the return of a classic...Bridgman was a legendary teacher at New York's Art Students' League. There he originated a system of drawing known as 'constructive anatomy.' In 1952, his seven books on anatomy were gathered into one volume, which became a standard work at art schools and universities. Published now, for the first time in paperback, it holds up as an indispensable volume with more than 200 illustrations of hands and hundreds of images of arms, shoulders, heads, torsos, legs, knees, and feet." -- Library Journal --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars truly a complete guide!! 4 Aug 2005
By Artois
Brigdeman's a genius when it comes to life drawing. This is a complete book covering whatever he taught through his lifetime, and a must for every life drawing student. The illustrations are a bit fuzzy, but you should expect them as they are copies of the Bridgeman's original works. But I would still give it five stars, as life drawing is more of a person's own passion than beautiful illustrations to inspire you. This is a book for people starting at all levels, and something you'd love to go back to again and again.
This book features complete structural study, incorporating muscle and skeletal studies to give you a complete idea of how a human body behaves in rest or in motion. Yes, its a physics of its own kind, but don't be deterred by it, but be inspired and keep your pencils and charcoal flowing.
So, if you're passionate about life drawing and want to make your efforts worthwhile, get this book and get hooked to it.

wow, this book is just great!! it really teaches you how to draw the human figure.
The ilustrations are just perfect, focusing in what is needed when you learn the figure, the movement of it, the relationships between limbs, proportion....and they are just beautiful!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A timeless classic 11 Oct 2010
By Maureen
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just received the Bridgman's Guide in the post and I'm delighted with it! As a self-taught newbie entering the world of human form sketching, this book is perfect for giving me just the right amount of push for added inspiration and guidance.
I am surprised at the size and weight of the volume ... I actually expected a thin little manual but it is actually quite a comprehensive book about sketching the human form and certainly belongs in every aspiring artist's literary collection.
A word of complimentary advice for other self-taught doodlers out there: this book focuses on drawing the HUMAN FORM as a whole. If you are looking for details of a specific field like portraiture, do purchase an added and relatively contemporary book that focuses solely on, say, portraits, to give you that added detailed advice in modern language. For instance I am learning tremendously by combining information from Bridgman's Guide along with Lance Richlin's "Lifelike Heads." It's an endless joyride. Enjoy! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Drawing from Life 15 Jun 2011
A great book with lots and lots of illustrations explaining the art of the body very well.
It doesn't just cover an art class pose but shows various positions for each part of the body including muscle structure etc, different angles on hands and feet.
All in all a very useful reference book.
Highly recommended.
