Product Description

Patsy Reid is from Knapp in Perthshire, aged 25 and is an experienced teacher and performer of both traditional and classical music. She remains the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Glenfiddich Fiddle Championship and released her debut solo album 'With Complements' in 2002. At 17, Patsy was a finalist in the original BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award and is now a member of the band Breabach who won a Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections 2005.
Commissioned as part of the Celtic Connections New Voices series in January 2008, 'Bridging The Gap' received such glowing reviews that it has now been recorded and released on CD. The 50-minute piece comprises nine original melodies on one of the seven modern modes of music (Ionian, Dorion, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian). Each mode has a distinctive flavour, character and colour of its own and seamlessly bridges the gap between folk and classical music.

Patsy has assembled a truly fine group of musicians on this album and her versatile performance is superb, of course. I particularly love Track 6 and 7 (The Strath Sunrise and Two of a Kind); in the former the cellist produces one tiny dud note near the start (this is a live performance), which serves as a foil to the utterly heart-rending sound of the cello for the rest of the track. No beauty without imperfection!

Brilliant! 10 Sept. 2009

I heard the first third of this brilliant album on 'Thistle and Shamrock" and for the first time in a long while, I had to have the whole. The remainder does not disappoint! This is an incredible blend of sounds and rhythms, achingly lovely harmonies with touches of discordance, intelligently designed and passionately performed throughout. Through and through, "Bridging the Gap" is an intensely interesting and enjoyable work of art.
a trippy, relaxing journey across cultures 4 Jun. 2014

A modern celtic-classical masterpiece. Works great for dedicated listening as well as for background music. Whenever I play it at social gatherings, I get compliments and questions on the music. The pacing of the entire performance works wonderfully from beginning to end, and the songs combine effectively and seamlessly into movements and the movements into a cohesive journey that literally does what its title says it does: it bridges the gap between three different musical worlds.

There's some fun technical stuff for other musicians, too, such as understanding how each song is composed based on a different mode of the major scale.

Thank you, Patsy!
