From Amazon.co.uk

Featuring a blousy, winningly inept size-12 heroine, Bridget Jones's Diary is a fetching adaptation of Helen Fielding's runaway bestseller, grittier than Ally McBeal but sweeter than Sex and the City. The normally sylphlike Renée Zellweger (Nurse Betty, Me, Myself and Irene) wolfed pasta to gain poundage to play "singleton" Bridget, a London-based publicist who divides her free time between binge eating in front of the TV, downing Chardonnay with her friends and updating the diary in which she records her negligible weight fluctuations and romantic misadventures of the year. Things start off badly at Christmas when her mother tries to set her up with seemingly standoffish lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), whom Bridget accidentally overhears "dissing" her. Instead she embarks on a disastrous liaison with her raffish boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant, infinitely more likable when he's playing a baddie instead of his patented tongue-tied fops). Eventually, Bridget comes to wonder if she's let her pride prejudice her against the surprisingly attractive Mr Darcy.

If the plot sounds familiar, that's because Fielding's novel was itself a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, whose romantic male lead is Mr Darcy. An extra ironic poke in the ribs is added by the casting of Firth, who played Austen's haughty hero in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Austen's novel. First-time director Sharon Maguire directs with confident comic zest, while Zellweger twinkles charmingly, fearlessly baring her cellulite and pulling off a spot-on English accent. Like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill (both of which were written by this film's co-screenwriter, Richard Curtis), Bridget Jones's stock-in-trade is a very English self-deprecating sense of humour, a mild suspicion of Americans (especially if they're thin and successful) and a subtly expressed analysis of thirtysomething fears about growing up and becoming a "smug married". The whole is, as Bridget would say, v. good. --Leslie Felperin

5.0 out of 5 stars Bridget Jones Diary 5 Jan 2004
By N. Wilson VINE™ VOICE
Format:VHS Tape
I knew little of Bridget Jones Diary before it came out. I had not read the book and I had avoided the hype. However know I see what it was all about.
This is a romantic comedy with a diffence. This is a really funny romantic comedy. normally, they are slightly funny here and there and only because it is ironic. Bridget Jones Diary is hilarious- I laughed so much I nearly missed the point of the film! And it is realyl stupid funny things- like "Happy New Year Brenda" and "Nice Boys Don't Kiss Like That" that really gets me giggling my pants off!
I thought making a Diary into a film would be so stupid. When you look at Adrian Mole when It was TVised you'll see what I mean. But this is brillient. There is a story. There is humor. There is fabulous acting by all the cast and it has to be one of the best films ever!
Really do watch this film- its not one for the faint hearted nor for the children- but really watch it, it will make you smile and giggle and you will enjoy it- its really true!
10/10 is underestimating the score of this film!

5.0 out of 5 stars British Comedy at it's Best 14 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Even the shock of casting of an American in the obviously British role could not stop this film being unmissable. Watching Hugh Grant in possibly his funniest role, showing us that he can indeed act, (and not just as an upper class fop)and Colin "phwoooar" Firth as the overlooked lurve interest, what more could you ask for. As for the story... well just let us just say that if your boyfriend/husband does not understand women more after watching this... they never will. I defy any woman to say with their hand on their hearts that they have never done, said or been in a situation that Bridget finds herself in almost everyday..

A real must viewing for all singletons and especially for all of you with single friends.

Made by the people who bought you such classic hits as 'Notting Hill' and 'Four weddings and a funeral' comes a hilarious and highly anticipated film of Helen Fielding's book. This movie is about the year in the life of a thirty something woman (Jones) who is sick and tired of being single and overweight.
Throw in a delightfully witty script co -written by Richard Curtis, an unpleasant turn from the normally soft Hugh Grant and a cast with huge amounts of talent and the result is everything fans and non fans could have hoped for.
Renee Zellweger was chosen to play the unglamorous role of Bridget Jones herself. Renee piled on the pounds to play the part and she pulls it off amazingly. While Colin Firth is brilliant as the posh and rich Mark Darcy.
Director Sharon Maguire mixes big laughs with touching romance brilliantly. The humour in the movie will make you laugh out loud as it takes you through Bridget's interesting and comical life. Highlights of the film include Bridget's New Year resolutions, her bunny rabbit suit; also Grant and Firth comically fight it out.
The angle of the movie is only focused on 3 characters, Bridget finding love with her 2 perfect men. Bridget is a clutse, she's unsuccessful, fat and unlucky in love and the movie explores those factors and how they fit into her life.
Final Verdict: With a top notch cast, witty script and enough laughs and romance to get you through, this rom-com is one not to be missed. Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Raining Men 12 Dec 2003
Format:DVD
This is a great film, being both funny and also very real.

I loved it, not an exact copy of the book, but not a bad attempt as you can now enjoy them both as seperate pieces.

Renee is great as 30 something Bridget, and her accent is amazing.

For us girls there is the gorgeous Colin Firth and also Hugh Grant if thats your thing.

Brilliant film -watch it and read the book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Gem 21 Feb 2003

I think a lot of guys shift uncomfortably in their seats as their girlfriends/wives turn to them and suggest a "chick flick" instead of the usual action-packed garbage on a Saturday night. I think some may easily consider this to be a "girls-only" film or perhaps something to be bullied into watching with the significant other. Well I am a guy and single and I absolutely LOVED this film!

Many are unsettled by the idea of Renée Zellweger (yes, she is American!) playing an English role but not only does she manage a very convincing English accent but also her acting is truly charming throughout.

The story essentially deals with a lonely early-thirties Londoner who is terrified of remaining alone for the rest of her life, and who is also trying to find the direction in her work that she is at present lacking.

The story is laced with ups and downs, which I think all of us can in some way empathise with, but ends on a happy note and unlike some romances that leave us singletons feeling deflated and lonely, it actually really cheers me up!

Dont think that a comedy can't be touching, and dont think that a romance can't make you laugh. Buy this! Its great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Definately one for your video collection 23 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
When I heard the book Bridget Jones' Diary was to be made into a film, I did not think they could possibly do the book justice but I was wrong. I laughed from beginning to end. If you've ever done any of the following: been on a diet, smoked and tried to give up, got drunk, tried to cook a gourmet meal and failed or worn "big pants" then you will sooooooooo relate to Bridget Jones.

If you don't relate to her or don't think it's funny then you must be a "smug married" to quote Bridget Jones.
