Product Description

CD Description

Gil Scott-Heron is justifiably recognised as one of the most unique black music artists of all time. His music transgresses all musical barriers in the same way that Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye did. Along with his song writing partner, MD and co-producer Brian Jackson he recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 1970 s, songs which combined a message with powerful rhythms. Bridges their 1977 album is one of their best, yet one that is often overlooked. Bridges takes you on a journey it is both lyrically and musically on point throughout and is an album that you can revisit time and time again and be informed, inspired and uplifted by. On this album Brian Jackson plays synthesiser bass, one of the earliest uses of an instrument that was to reshape the sound of soul music in the Eighties. Racetrack In France and Hello Sunday Hello Road are joyful up tempo tracks reflecting experiences from life on the road. We Almost Lost Detroit tells of a near accident at a nuclear power station that had the potential to wipe the motor city off the map. In Delta Man (Where I m Coming From) you can hear the deep emotion in Gil s voice as he reflects on his ancestry back to the Mississippi cotton fields. This album is still one of my all time personal favourites and I believe it deserves its place in soul music history as one of the greats. We feel privileged to be able to present Bridges on CD for the first time outside of Japan, with the music being taken from the original master tapes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Red and Black, 5 Sep 2009

The band seems to take over on the later 70's GSH records. More funk, more politics, more world-view. I prefer the more personal songs of earlier records or of the, later, Spirits. But, still, there's a lot to like on this album - the jaunty 'Vildgolia', the zonked out 'We Almost Lost Detroit.' Definitely worth buying, if you're a fan. Though, if you are relatively new to GSH, Winter in America might be a better place to start.

Also, what about that cover? A beautiful piece of vinyl. CD's, MP3's. I'm not convinced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally On CD - Gil's Masterpiece, 23 Jun 2009
By A. Davis "astandavis" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Bridges (Audio CD)
I have waited a long time for this Gil Scott Heron release. I don't know why it took so long. All of Gil's music is worth owning but "Bridges" and "It's Your World" were always my favorites. There is not a weak track on the disc and the music is outstanding. I saw Gil at Blues Alley a few years ago and he was still bringing the heat. Every time I hear him sing "All of the Places We've Been", my life flashes before me. No other vocalist/musician compares to this man's natural ability to make you feel something deep and meaningful. He is a true American treasure.

There are still a couple of CD's missing from his collection like "Real Eyes" and "Secrets". So hopefully "Bridges" will trigger the release of his entire catalog. I hope Gil is doing well. During a time when most music is falling short, this music soars above the rest.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought it was only me!!, 30 Sep 2009

Agree completely with the previous reviewers. I still have my original vinyl copy and Bridges is one of the reasons I still have and use my turntable. I have been looking and checking for years for this to come out on CD. YEAH!!! I have been listening to this record for 30+ years and as another reviewer stated the the lyrics paint a picture. The package (lyrics, music, vocal incantations) have always put me right in the middle of that "racetrack" or in my car cruising down I95 to visit my home and relatives in the South, or when I worked in the environmental industry and stood at the base of a nuke plant cooling tower looking up, and "Detroit" running through my head. I think this is a must have or at least must hear and if it doesn't take you to where Gil and Brian are "comin' from" then you must be one of the "deaf, dumb, and blind". Enjoy!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars classic tunes, 30 Sep 2009
By J. Campbell - Published on Amazon.com

delta man does it for me. It tells the need for revolution thru the african american history in the united states. I wish I was at that race track in France and Blow wind Blow is just a beautiful poem sat to music. To bad he is considered an underground artist much to counter culture for main stream.
