Product Description

Product Description

1 mix-up, 2 misfits, 3 horror stories, 4 fables, 5 speculations make up this collection of short stories by Roger Morris. The stories range in tone from the playful to the sinister. At times surreal, even bizarre, always entertaining, they all demonstrate what the Daily Express once described as Morris’s “storytelling panache”.
Writing as R.N. Morris, Roger Morris is the author of a series of historical crime novels set in nineteenth century St Petersburg. A Vengeful Longing was short-listed for the 2008 CWA Duncan Lawrie Gold Dagger for best crime novel. The Cleansing Flames was short-listed for the 2011 CWA Ellis Peters Historical Dagger. In 2012 he began a new series featuring detective Silas Quinn. The first in the series is Summon Up The Blood. He is currently at work on the second.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Surreal Thing 11 Jun 2012

According to his twitter profile R N Morris is "...a novelist. I make things up. You have been warned." This collection of short stories is Morris at his best, making things up. From mis-identified artists/engineers through to giant leeches, magical instruments and a strange world that seems extremely familiar to anyone who has visited getty images website.

These stories rattle along with a snappy turn of phrase and ideas on every page. There is a modern gothic sentiment at work here, along with a palpable air of menace, modern fairy tales with a surreal twist. I laughed out loud, alarmed some fellow tube passengers and retched a couple of times. What more could you want from a collection of stories?
