5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Chabrol plus Ruth Rendell 4 Aug 2006
Format:DVD
I had heard this Ruth Rendell story dramatised on radio and was absolutely bowled over, so I was really pleased when I saw the DVD was being released. And I wasn't disappointed. Chabrol seems to have a special feeling for the books of Ruth Rendell (he has previous adaptations of her work) and the two main actors make the story nightmarish and yet believable.

Incidentally, I had no problems at all with the DVD I was sent.

4.0 out of 5 stars a very different kind of Chabrol film 17 Mar 2008
By aiya
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Its a boy meets girl story, based on a Ruth Rendell novel. We follow the main character in his rather humdrum day to day existence, meet each member of his unremarkable family, and we observe his gradual loss of reason, and his surrender to passion, as he is drawn further into the mysterious encounter, until one day he realises he is inextricably in love with someone who treats killing as part of the love game. This film is interesting because not only is it a psychological thriller, it spends time setting up the socio-economic background which contributes to the choice that the protagonist eventually makes while his object of desire remains from beginning to end alluringly mysterious.

Like Rendells books, the perfect entertainment for a quiet evening.

3.0 out of 5 stars an enjoyable film with good dialogue 14 Jun 2008
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an enjoyable film to watch because the acting and dialogue are good and the story is based on a Ruth Rendell book.Nice cinematography also helped. The bonus section of the dvd includes a 10 minute documentary
of the film making process and you'll hear and see a lot of Claude Chabrol the director and of Benoit Magimel and Laura Smet who play the main actors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Successful adaptation of Rendell to French milieu 27 July 2010
By technoguy TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
A good bourgeois household in the suburbs of Nantes,Philippe(Benoit Magimel) is a salesman who lives with his widowed mother,Christine(Clement) and 2 sisters,Sophie and Patricia. He is fearful of violence and over solicitous to his mother.Sophie the eldest sister is getting married to the nerd Jacky.Christine does hairdressing at home to earn some spare change.Patricia is a wild child staying out late, smoking and drinking too much, mixing with the wrong sort.Christine has met a new man Gerard(he doesn't like dogs).A local woman has been murdered(on TV news).

Philippe falls in love with Senta(Laura Smet),one of the bridesmaids at his sister's wedding.Love at first sight.Philippe spends all his nights with the mysterious Senta,in her strange basement of her step-mother's apartment. He neglects his mother and younger sister.Senta's love is exclusive and demanding. She is an actress and model waiting for work and auditions in Paris.Philippe questions her lack of plays among her books. She is a fantasist story-teller(liar and psychopath) and demands they both prove their love for each other, they will have to kill somebody for each other(as well as write a poem, plant a tree, have sex with their own gender).

Philippe thinks this is a joke, but claims he has killed a man(having read it in the paper),the down-and-out,who sleeps inside the exit to her grounds.Senta does likewise, thinking she has killed the man Gerard, who jilted his mother. There are many side characters, like Gerard, Jacky and a stone head statue(Flora) that are all woven into this tale.L'Amour fou brings out the tension and inner conflicts in Philippe.Senta is a basement creature who lives in the shadows with her obsessions reeling Philippe into a dark maelstrom of emotions he finds it hard to get out of or escape from.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great film from the master of suspense! 23 Mar 2006
Format:DVD
I was interested to read Mr Moore's review - I agree entirely with his thoughts on the film. On the matter of the faulty disc, I got a great deal from Cinefile - they sent me a new dvd by return. Faulty disc do happen from time to time, but Cinefile are to be congratulated on their prompt response to the problem. I was able to watch this film again and really enjoyed the making-of too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece by Chabrol: shame the DVD was faulty 14 July 2006
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a late masterpiece from one of French cinema's finest auteurs. And a very enjoyable thriller! The only problem was with the DVD. I bought two copies and found that neither played without the film stop/starting throughout, frame jumping, and at other moments suddenly speeding up. I tried both on three different players and had the same problems each time. So the five stars are for M.Chabrol; zero stars for CineFile Films.
- I returned faulty DVD to CineFile with SAE, and have just received, with a letter of apology (!), new one that plays. So five stars for CineFile!!!
