It is almost impossible to consider this piece of music without thinking of the classic TV series for which it was written. However this, in my opinion, is one of its greatest strengths. Geoffrey Burgon has composed and conducted a truly beautiful soundtrack that reflects the highs and lows of Evelyn Waugh's epic saga of two doomed Oxford undergraduates. The orchestra transports you, at various times, to lazy summer days spent in college quads; Venice in the sunshine; and the thrill of the hunt - as well as evoking the ideas of innocence; love; death and fate.
Even on its own, the score is outstanding and tracks such as 'Brideshead Theme' are timeless, sometimes reminiscent of the overture to Wagner's Tannhauser. Moreover, though most of the music is soothing and soft, there is a variety here that can leave you feeling relaxed one minute and energised the next. The juxtaposition of 'Sebastian's Summer' and 'The Hunt' is a particular example of the way that this CD will surprise and delight you from start to finish.

The music for the TV series Brideshead Revisited, composed by Geoffrey Burgon contributes so much to the success of it. However, it is not entirely original. It is based on the trio Soave sia il vento from the opera Così fan tutte by Mozart. I think Geoffrey Burgon adapted it brilliantly for Brideshead, though. All credit to him for contributing to the enjoyment of so many viewers and listeners.

For once , the fact that I had seen the film on TV a few times did not spoil the book. I just had to buy the theme music to go with it.I suppose it made me a bit sad; it made me think of life as a whole, and certainly made me consider how faith, and even more so, religion , shapes our lives. A wonderful book.

Oh my childhood, Anthony Andrews, the teddy bear and a blue and white Chrysalis label to boot!
