2.0 out of 5 stars The Bride Wore Blue 26 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I don;t expect to get Booker quality writing in this genre, although Georgette Heyer is stylish, but this is really not good enough. Poor editing does not help such sloppy casual authorship. Apart from the Americanisms which are inappropriate, scattering 9 'tis' and a few 'twas' hardly evokes the period. Ms Bolen's odd adjectives. phrases and sentences are bewildering. How does one imagine an Earl scramble down the stairs; or ....'leaped on the bed, his long arms lurching towards..... Then again ...a road lined with an alley of trees. Of course there's ....her chest fell as if whacked by falling timber. There was a lot of scooting going on, but the most original I think goes to ...he leaned on the wall and scooted himself a few feet at a time, using the strength in his good leg........and scooted along the dimly lit hall. Remarkably this was going on while he was manhandling an unconscious lady. I could go on the book is full of such Bolenisms. I certainly would not suggest that anyone buy this unless they wanted to run a sweep on who spots the most diabolical misuse of the English language.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great 23 Dec 2011
By xyz
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book on the strength of the 5 star review above and really regretted it. Neither of the main characters are particularly likeable, and the only reason they don't get together straight away is the heroine's snobbery. However the real problem with the book is the pace, you read for ages and ages yet nothing in particular happens and we just get given detailed descriptions of balls and clothes which are just boring. The author obviously gets bored too and begins to invent random events (an elopement, an evil villain) that have nothing much to do with the romance between the lead characters.

The writing could also use some work, it's full of long winded different ways to describe the same character such as the raven haired beauty did this and then the dark-eyed vixen did that, or some such.

I've read loads of historical romance and there are many much better stories out there where the authors take time to craft believable characters with a touching romance. Suggest you give this one a miss.

Having read books 4 and 2 of this series, I wanted to read where it all started. I love series where each book gives you tidbits of characters from previous books and this series does exactly that. This is a nice start to the series, introducing the characters who will star in the next three books as well as following Felicity and her second chance at love. Well written, not too predictable and the obligatory happy ending - a book I enjoyed. The only issue I have is that, having read how much in love (SPOILERS) Diana and George are, it makes the fourth book less believable. Never-the-less, great read, good price and an author I will continue to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good plots spoiled by careless editing. 26 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I generally enjoy Romantic fiction, especially of the Regency period.
This review encompasses all four books of "The Brides of Bath" series.
The basic plots are intriguing and the interactions of the main characters satisfactory.
Sadly, my reading experience was negatively affected by the extremely careless spelling and poor use of the English language.
There appears to be an over-reliance on Spell-Check. Is this the fault of the author or very careless editors and editing?
I suspect the latter.
You don't "pour" over a book or document, you "pore". "Inquire instead of "enquire" or vice-versa and many other instances!
"I should like for you to......." instead of "I should like you to........". Why is the use of the word "for" allowed in this context?
It is totally superfluous.
There are many other similar grammatical solecisms.
Authors and, particularly editors, would be well advised to read books by Georgette Heyer and Jane Austin to appreciate correct English
usage and spelling.
I realise these Romances are mainly directed toward a female readership, the vast majority North American.
They are not intended to be high literature. but for an enjoyable read - a few hours pleasant escapism.
Nevertheless these readers deserve much higher standards of care in editing.
In my opinion, they are being demeaned.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Mistake 23 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've read quite a few Regency Romances over the last 30 years, but this one took the cake as being diabolically poor quality. I honestly don't expect Jane Austen/Georgette Heyer quality with R.R.'s, but the general theme of a bit of a beautiful lifestyle, bit of a laugh, bit of romance, characters we love to love and just a smidgeon of decent writing quality. I accidently bought this one after forgot I couldn't finish another one of hers; I won't be buying any more of this authors work. (And I paid more then I usually would of a kindle R.R.) Sorry luv...go back to school for plot and character developement.
