Product Description

Mystic songs about an Arabia Dracula, Nubian dance music, funky electrified xylophones and mysterious Zar/Voodoo grooves from the acclaimed Sudanese/Egyptian collective RANGO. Following a sold-out show at the Barbican's Transcender Weekender, and a triumphant month-long UK tour in October 2009, mystic Egyptian/Sudanese musicians Rango release their debut album "Bride of The Zar" on 30IPS Records in May 2010. Recorded in Cairo and London the disc features a 190 year-old vintage Rango Xylophone with spirit manifesting gourd resonators, tales of Yawera Bey - the Arabian Dracula, songs recounting the mysterious disappearance of Sardine rations amongst Sudanese serving in the Egyptian army and Bellydance-inducing Nubian melodies played on lyres retrofitted with electric pickups and shakers made from recycled aerosol cans. Format: Audio CD
Great Nubian rootsy trance and dance band.
Acoustic - pulsing bass, 'arabic' sounding drums, call and response style singing over driving percussion.
Featuring musicians from Bedouin Jerry Can Band and El Tanbura, this is brilliant acoustic music - more than a match for the over produced Egyptian pop of today. The sound reminds me also of that great Nubian band Salamat (try the CD Mambo El Soudani) or Ali Hassan Kuban (try Walk Like a Nubian).

I saw this group in concert and bought their sudani-voodoo EP. I am so pleased that they have released this great CD. Thankfully it is not over-produced and captures the fun and energy of their live performances. One of my favourite CDs of all time !
