Amazon.co.uk Review

How important is the perfect wedding? Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson) have been best friends since childhood and each has always dreamed of an extravagant wedding at the Plaza hotel. When both friends get engaged in the same week, they rush to the exclusive wedding planner Marion St. Claire (Candice Bergen) to book the perfect weddings at the Plaza hotel. The reservations get mixed up and both weddings end up scheduled on the same day and, since there are no other suitable openings available at the Plaza, the friends find themselves in the impossible situation of having to decide who will sacrifice her long-held dream and change venues. It turns out that neither woman is willing to give up her plans for a perfect wedding and the friends turn against one another in a hilarious battle that results in everything from blue hair to rumours of pregnancy and embarrassing home videos accompanying one bride's walk down the aisle. Can even a life-long friendship survive the emotional turmoil of two weddings gone wrong? Bride Wars is an amusing look at the trials of friendship and love that's sure to inspire laughter and perhaps even a tear or two. --Tami Horiuchi, Amazon.com

Synopsis

Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway go veiled head to veiled head in this bridal comedy. Childhood friends Liv (Hudson) and Anne (Hathaway) have dreamed of June weddings at the Plaza since they were kids, and now their fantasy is finally within reach. Both young women have gotten proposals, and they've booked their dates at the famed Manhattan landmark. But a mistake in the office of their wedding planner, Marion St. Claire (Candice Bergen), causes their weddings to be scheduled on the same day, and neither woman will budge. Harsh words escalate into sabotage and each woman craftily plots the demise of the other's wedding until events reach a screeching, squealing pitch on a sunny June day.

With roles in films such as HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS and MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL, Hudson has perfected starring in light comedies. In BRIDE WARS, she doesn't take her usual romantic route, and she displays good chemistry with the always fine Hathaway. The romances between the brides and their respective grooms (EVERWOOD's Chris Pratt and REBA's Steve Howey) aren't the point; instead, it's the creative one-upmanship that Liv and Emma engage in to the detriment of their lifelong friendship. For those who mark pages in bridal magazines, BRIDE WARS may provide escapist fare a la BRIDEZILLAS or the romantic comedy 27 DRESSES.

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable but funny..., 13 April 2009

This is a chick-flick that is worth seeing if you having nothing else to do one day. Although it is very predictable as to what will happen throughout the film especially at the end, it does bring some funny moments into it that will cheer you up none the less.
The funny, sarcastic moments that occur throughout this wedding fight film does make it worth seeing but for me, it wasn't amazing.
Overall, good funny chick flick for a rainy day, but have seen better. :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Torn between two weddings, 5 April 2009

"If I were your wedding, I'd be sleeping with one eye open..."

Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):

1. BFFs Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson) dream of their dream weddings at the Plaza Hotel
2. This is the one thing that Emma has ever wanted
3. Liv always gets everything she wants
4. Oops! Both weddings get booked for the same day
5. Open warfare commences
6. For most of the movie
7. Bit over the top if you ask me
8. ... but funny anyway

This is a straight up chick flick, made watchable by Hathaway and Hudson. If I lost you at "chick flick", I apologize, but this is exactly what this is.

The sabotage scenarios are mostly funny, albeit highly improbable, but this is a good movie to rent for an afternoon giggle with the girls, over wine, cheese and chocolate.

Warning: Forcing menfolk to watch this may constitute grounds for divorce in some countries.

3.5 stars

3.0 out of 5 stars Bubblegum fluffery... but less substantial, 16 Jan 2009
By Anna (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Bride Wars [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
This film follows in the tradition of unapologetically-pink-fluffy-chick-flick-girlinesss - it's closely related to films like, for example, Legally Blonde and 13 Going On 30... only Bride Wars isn't as good.

Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson play childhood best friends who are as close as two people can be until there is a mix up with their wedding planner (played by Candace Bergen who is seeing something of a revival since her role in Boston Legal) and both have weddings booked at The Plaza on the same day.

Their competing soon turns into out and out sabotage - nonsense like trying to ensure the other gains weight so they no longer fit their Vera Wang wedding dress, and sneaking into the hair-dresser so hair is mistakenly dyed blue... petty and vindictive and wholly unrealistic.

But there's no denying that its pink-girliness is watchable and fun in its own way; it's as deep a puddle that's been baking in the sun all day, and as meaty as candy-floss, but it's certainly very feel-good. As I said, it's not as enjoyable as Legally Blonde and 13 Going on 30, but it's a nice escape from the real world for a couple of hours and it has a satisfyingly predictable ending.

Men, however, will hate it with the fire of a thousand suns, and any chap who is dragged to see this by his significant other and manages to make it all the way through... well, kudos, sir. Very big kudos indeed.
