A guilty pleasure... 8 Oct 2010
By The Irish Lady - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ok, so it's definitly a "chic flick" but had to own it just the same. Every year when this comes on, I thought about getting it, so I finally got over the laziness and bought it. I like just about anything Andrea Roth is in, so I'm very happy with my purchase. It's kooky and follows the standard rom/com basics. Only requires a bowl of popcorn and a rootbeer to have a marvelous night.

A hum of a movie that does not bear too critical a viewing. 8 Feb 2012
By M - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Arrgh! the character of Jake. He was written, and/or directed as flat as a book cover. There is nothing there. One cannot fathom why Gwen would fall for him. And it's hard to understand why she is so determined to snag somebody, almost anybody? The story doesn't give us much. But as to Jake? We're given no reason, not one, for wanting to even go on a date with this guy. OK. Maybe if you want to look, and talk to, muscle. But Jake? No. No. No.

I must note that I like the tone of the movie, the sound of it, and it is very relaxing. In fact, rather quite like a traditional Hallmark card. Non-threatening, nice, blanc? I watch but mostly listen to this movie on a fairly regular basis, despite my criticism of it. It must be because of the sound. They were wise to cast Delta Burke.

Another reason it's easier to listen to is the wardrobe. The men are well-dressed, and look exactly as though they stepped out of International Male. (Is that still in print?). Even the janitor seen in the background in one shot looks like he's wearing designer janitor duds. But, with the slight exception of Dahlia, the women are dressed like cheap whores, in the cheapest, tawdry, clothing one could find. You know those cheap fabric blouses that show breasts? Well, that's it.
And Andrea works in a publishing house.

And, for some reason that escapes me, even the accessories are horrible. Sandra wears what appears to be a pop-bead necklace, in repeated scenes, with beads almost as large as ping-pong balls.

The director and the director of photography seem to have an obsession with showing viewers the pours on actors' faces. There are far too many close-ups. I mean, "close."

At the end of the movie, Gwen is carrying lillies. Earlier in the film, there is a big scene where sne announces she is allergic to them. (Was this meant as some kind of Freudian symbolism?)

Maybe this is really a movie for men, after all.
