Product Description

Product Description

This is the story of a bricklayer. A master of his craft, he keeps its sacred teachings secret. For him a house is the dwelling place of a soul, and a house must be built in the right spirit or the soul inside it will suffer. The building of an arch is a ritual to obtain a right relation with the earth and a connection with the truth.

The bricklayer recalls his previous life as a Druid priest. He talks about the creation of the sacred landscape of these islands; how even a simple stick lying on the ground would tell people the direction they needed to go in; how when people stared at the stars, they were staring at their own mind. The reader sees the world through the eyes of this great, magical being at the time of the Roman invasion, and learns how he tricked Julius Caesar and set in train the series of events that would lead to Caesar's assassination on the Ides of March.

But as the bricklayer continues, he worries he is losing his ancient, sacred powers. The vision begins to fray at the edges as we learn how he has recently taken violent revenge on yobs who have mocked him. Is he really connected to a once living Druid priest, or is he gradually losing himself in his own fantasies?

An unusual debut 29 July 2011
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Leon Jenner's Debut is a title that is unusual in that it's a novella rather than a full story. It's cleverly written and the fact that it's more the tale of one man reminiscing makes this a book that relies on the reader's apathy for the character as he worries about his own mental health.

Add to this some wonderful prose, decent descriptive's and of course an authorly voice that carries the story through from start to finish to make it memorable. All in, this tale was one that I was pleased to have read and whilst quite Avant-guarde in its inception, it was one that raised questions that made it thought provoking. Definitely a title for someone seeking something a little different.

Desperately dull 28 Aug 2011
By A. L. Rutter TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I need to talk about the main positive of Bricks by Leon Jenner. It is presented beautifully. It is a lush hardback, with lovely black and white illustrations within. The paper is thick and feels delicious to turn the pages.

It is just such a shame that the interior words cannot match up to the exterior. In all honesty, I found the prose to be dry and with little flow or passion. At times it was overly pretentious - showcasing what seemed to be 101 philosophy with little relation to the overall story.

And the poetry! In a very slim novel, some of the poetry stretched to four pages worth of text, which is hard to take in what is supposed to be a story - particularly when said poetry isn't of a great quality.

I found myself both bored and confused by the plot, which is not a good mix. I struggled to the end, to be sure that there was nothing that I was missing, but I can say that this was wasted effort.

Dull, dull, dull - and definitely not worth the rather hefty price tag for the hardback.

Spiritual Fantasy 26 July 2011
By N. Brett TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
A short and unusual book this and quite hard to categorise, "spiritual fantasy" is probably as close as I can get.

A modern day bricklayer provides almost an essay on his alternative life as a Druid and his influence over historical events in Britain's past. We learn that Druids can travel through time and dimensions and have been key influencers in our past. It appears that Druids have shaped history and an example is given of how the invasion of Britain by Julius Caesar was directed by our Druid. Very much in touch with Mother Earth and providing guidance on listening to the land and your inner self this will very much appeal to those who are inclined to, or are interested in, these beliefs and themes.

As a story it has two main threads, the memories of the Roman invasion and a modern day crisis of confidence and reality. This is wrapped around views on the spirituality of the Earth and some occasional verse. Two appendices put some of the main text into context.

It's short and a little expensive, but it is obviously a work that is deep and tries very hard to mix a message with the story of a man in turmoil. It's interesting and not my usual kind of thing and while I found it an interesting experience, this will not be for everyone and it is important to understand what this is before you fork out for it.

I was provided with a review copy of this book.
