Product Description

Darrin's life has been going downhill ever since his girlfriend Bridget walked out on him without a word of explanation six months ago. Soon after losing her, he lost his job, and his car, and eventually his enthusiasm for life. He can't imagine things getting worse—until he sees Bridget again, for the first time since she walked out, just moments before she leaps to her death from a bridge. In his quest to find out why Bridget took her own life, he encounters a depressive (and possibly immortal) cult leader; a man with a car that can drive out of this world and into others; a beautiful psychotic with a chrome shotgun; and a bridge that, maybe, leads to heaven. Darrin's journey leads him into a place called the Briarpatch, which is either the crawlspace of the universe, or a series of ambitious building projects abandoned by God, or a tangle of alternative universes, depending on who you ask. Somewhere in that disorderly snarl of worlds, he hopes to find Bridget again. Or at least a reason to live without her.

5.0 out of 5 stars A totally gripping urban fantasy by Tim Pratt. 7 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Tim Pratt is one of the best fantasy/sci-fi writers of the 21st century.
His story had me up all night wondering if the hero would ever find out the truth about his dead ex-girlfriend. The mystery surrounding just what the Briarpatch is was so compelling it had me double-checking every dark shadow you see from the corner of your eye in the small hours of the morning.
If you like this story then I recommend that you read Tim Pratt's The Nex. Although not connected in any way, The Nex could easily be what you would find if you could reach the centre of the Briarpatch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Urban Fantasy as you've not seen it before 22 Dec 2011
By The Mad Hatter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Pratt gets very dark on us and I half wonder if he was going through a depression during the writing. The story was beautifully told explores what is typically known as the "Otherworld," but this isn't just some dimension with frolicking fairies filled with golden apples. No, Pratt's Otherworld is a mysterious, dark, and ever changing place filled with lost beings and some scary-ass monsters. Emotionally fueled, Briarpatch explores what it means to live and love. There were definitely some pacing issues, but the twisted characters were all so intriguing I couldn't turn away. This is Urban Fantasy as you've not seen it before. The closets comparison would be Charles de Lint.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent dark fantasy 20 Oct 2012

I'm a huge fan of the author's Marla Mason series, so I decided to give his other fiction a shot. I'm very glad I did. Briarpatch is definitely my kind of novel: dark, fascinating, and populated with interesting characters. While it is dark and sometimes depressing, it definitely had its lighter moments. There's a scene between Darrin's girlfriend and best friend waiting for him to come home that had me laughing out loud. That rarely happens when I'm reading fiction.

Overall, Briarpatch was a very entertaining novel. My favorite character in the whole book was Echo. She was crazy fun and unpredictable. Loved her!

Highly recommended to readers of dark fantasy dealing with the possibilities of parallel worlds.

This is my favorite Pratt book to date. I read it in two days on Kindle, it was awesome. A good masterpiece, complex characters that were developed well, and great imagery. Keep 'em coming, Tim!
