Living in Singapore as a boy, and having seen Egypt, Aden, India, Ceylon, Pakistan and Penang on the way out and home - in those days you went by sea - this gave me the wanderlust. So on leaving grammar school in Belfast I went to radio college and got my Merchant Naval Radio Officer Certificate. However, my then girlfriend - now my wife - said that if I went to sea I'd be like my uncles, never really able to come ashore. So I applied for a job in Air Intelligence. Aged 19, I reported to Bletchley Park. Whilst there I was transferred to MI8 and ended up at Beaumanor. My wanderlust satisfied by years in Cyprus, Ascension Island and Hong Kong, plus seeing myriad other places, on being medically retired from Intelligence work I settled down in Ulster. And, eventually, took up writing. Some of my books reflect my radio intelligence background, or are set in places I lived.
