Product Description

Product Description

The Breville VTT296 is a two slot two slice black toaster with a difference--it’s also a radio. Cleverly combining two kitchen essentials, the Breville Radio Toaster packs both food and entertainment to deliver perfectly cooked toast and your favourite music, news and sports broadcasts. So whether you’re grabbing some breakfast and need to check the weather and traffic updates before heading out for the day or are winding down with a late-night snack and some relaxing tunes--you only need the one handy and compact appliance.

High-quality integrated radio

Enjoy all your favourite radio stations with the fully integrated, high-quality radio. Broadcasting on both FM and AM frequencies, the radio includes an antenna to help improve your reception and a volume control to keep everything at the desired noise level. It can store up to 10 pre-set stations so you can assemble a variety of easy-to-find channels with little effort. It also features an auxiliary input, so you can hook it up to an MP3 Player to access your own personal library of music (a lead is required for this process which is not included).

All-in-one portable appliance helps save space

It can be difficult to find space in the kitchen for all your appliances, especially in small living spaces, making the Breville Radio Toaster a real space saver. Rather than waste valuable room on two appliances, this all-in-one helps give you back more space and it also boasts a compact design, much the same size as a ‘normal’ toaster, so there’s no compromise on size either.

Being so compact, the Radio Toaster is also easily portable so you can take it with you on caravan trips and the like. And while it has a sturdy and solid build, it’s comparatively lightweight, weighing less than 2 kilograms (kg)--less than 1 kg more than ‘normal’ two slice toasters and about 1 kg less than four slice toasters.

Novel and stylishly retro

The Breville Radio Toaster also looks the part. Its black finish, curved top and silver circular speaker combine to give it retro, 1950s feel that is nostalgic and yet still modern. And by combining a radio with a toaster, it has a fun, quirky quality that makes it stand out from other household appliances--great for gadget lovers and those looking for something slightly different in their kitchen.

Sleek and smart toaster

In addition to its radio functions, the VTT296 doesn’t neglect to pack a number of helpful toaster features. It has variable browning control which allows you to choose how dark or light you like your toast and variable width slots allowing breads of various thicknesses to be fully toasted. So whether it's a small slice or something a bit bulkier--all sizes are properly accommodated.

Features include a reheat button which brings cooled toast back up to temperature without burning it; a defrost button which automatically lengthens the toasting time to allow for the defrosting of frozen bread and a mid-cycle cancel button allowing you to stop the toasting process as and when you want to. Remove smaller items without burning your fingers thanks to the extra-high lift which raises the bread carriage for easier access. And keep crumb mess to a minimum with the removable crumb tray which collects any crumbs that may fall from the bread as you toast it. The VTT296 is also fitted with illuminated blue buttons for easy use, cord storage and a non-slip base.

Breville is the leading brand of small home kitchen appliances in the UK, with a hugely successful range of products across the spectrum of kitchen appliances including kettles, toasters, irons, blenders, food processors, microwaves and many others. Having delighted in the multi-tasking wonders that are Alan Sugar's toaster-phone and toaster-fax combos for many a year, I didn't think either could be 'topped' (excuse the pun!). But I was so, so wrong. This is the ultimate in bread-related boogie contraption for everyone that likes toast and toe-tappin' tunes- from those without any 'bread' to the upper crust alike. Huzzah!

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)

This isn't a lengthy video review. The video merely serves to give an idea of sizing and also what the toaster actually looks like.

I was delighted when I unpacked the toaster because it is almost a perfect match for our Kitchen Craft Le'Xpress Coloured Whistling Kettle 2.0 Litres - 'Midnight Black' and the two items look stunning together. We've had lots of comments on both the kettle and toaster from visitors.

The toaster is wider than a conventional toaster but not by very much. As the radio on the toaster meant we were able to remove our old radio from the kitchen, we're actually saving space.

The radio is not digital (my husband's only complaint!) but is a fantastic accessory. We've ended up using the radio way more than the toaster itself. You can save your favourite radio stations as presets and being able to listen to music or something other than silence while I cook or wash up is a real plus point.

From a toasting point of view - it's a very good toaster for standard-sized bread. I find that taller slices of bread from the bakery fit in with a bit of a squeeze. But no problems otherwise.

I'm delighted with it and, having had a toaster with radio, would not want to go back to just an ordinary toaster again. Hubby was less impressed initially but uses it all the time which speaks volumes. It just is the sheer convenience of pressing a single button to flood your kitchen with happy morning music while you make your toast. Great gadget and would make a nice gift too.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
    Length: 3:05 Mins
This is the first toaster-radio I've ever seen so top marks to Breville for combining together two kitchen essentials!

The toaster-radio is attractively designed with smooth, rounded curves in a modern 'retro' style. Build quality is good and it feels as though it's going to last. The operation buttons (stop/eject, reheat, defrost) illuminate in blue when in use and the loading lever has a smooth action, even for lifting out tea-cakes which can often get stuck in other machines. The two slots will accommodate thick or thin sliced bread (including rougher home-cut slices) or thicker items such as crumpets and tea-cakes and all are toasted to perfection and individual taste using the browning control, although I found that crumpets needed 2-3 cycles. A useful feature is the reheat facility - for when you forget to remove your toast while it's hot.

The radio worked well. Simply raise the antenna aerial, twist the tuning/station store button to the right or left and it will tune into the nearest channel. When it reaches a station of your choice, up to five FM and a further five AM stations can be stored. However, the display only gives the frequency and not the name of the station - a small gripe. The sound quality is good and boosted by the 5-band equaliser's modes: flat, pop, rock, classical and jazz, but it is not digital or digital quality, nor is it stereo. There is also an AUX input socket to enable an MP3 player or CD player to be connected and playback via the radio's speaker.

    Strengths
    Innovative product
    Attractive sleek design
    Good build quality
    Excellent space-saving appliance
    Good quality toaster
    Effective equaliser on radio
    Clear radio display

    Weaknesses
Radio is neither digital nor stereo
Radio display shows only frequency not station name
Expensive at its current launch price

This is the ideal product for those of us with small kitchens where making the best use of limited space is important while also helping to avoid the clutter of excessive appliances. However, at its current launch price, it is quite expensive and, if successful, I wouldn't be surprised to see some cheaper manufacturers launching their copy products to follow very soon.
