4.0 out of 5 stars Breville Crystal Clear Jug Kettle 21 May 2013
Verified Purchase
We have had this kettle for a couple of weeks, taking advantage of Amazon's offer price of 37.50 while it lasted, and I would like to come back and review it after a couple of years, so readers can get an idea of how long lasting it is. This is something I felt was missing from a great deal of kettle reviews when I was researching. For now, here are some initial thoughts:-

Amazon's delivery was nice and quick - it arrived within the week on free delivery. The kettle looks very nice indeed, and has been admired by visitors. The blue light is very subtle; it is practically invisible in bright light and only looks really gorgeous with the lights off! The light does not go all the way up the handle, as in the picture, nor does the whole of the water area light up - there has definitely been some enhancement in the promotional pictures. The kettle boils quickly and pours nicely, though I feel it stays boiling a few seconds longer than necessary after boiling point is reached. This may be because of the lid - I think the fit could be tighter when it's closed. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the filter is made of metal, which means it won't perish like other kettle filters I have had. However, the holes in the metal filter are bigger than in a mesh; also the filter doesn't quite sit snugly to the sides of the kettle, so a little limescale is escaping into drinks when poured, unless I'm careful. I followed the instructions to boil and empty the kettle three times before using the water, and have noticed no nasty taste to the water. During the first couple of days of use, there was a constant collection of condensation in the top half of the kettle which spoilt the effect somewhat.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good 30 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase
I was worried about ordering this kettle. Similar to a previous reviewer, I too have a Spectra kettle and even after a few months drinks still taste of plastic. With all of the switch problems mentioned I didn't want to replace plastic tasting drinks with cold ones. But thankfully this kettle has proven to be a success. Boils quickly and quietly and so far no premature switching off.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love my new kettle 30 Nov 2013
As indicated in the title, my kettle is new so I can't comment on longevity. Also, I bought mine from Argos, but I prefer this review site. Plus I felt that the reviews here were unduly pessimistic and could do with something to balance them.

The switch on my old kettle (also Breville) was beginning to fail after about 10 years sterling service so I thought I'd treat myself to a new one. My lady friend used to complain that she could never tell how full the old kettle was - I always went by heft, but I suspect she was more used to a transparent panel. Here I've gone the whole hog to get a fully transparent jug kettle.

Pro's: looks very pretty when working, especially in the dark. 3kW element so boils quickly. Transparent so you can see at a glance how much water is left. And of course all the inherited advantages of a jug kettle with a separate base (no kettle lead). Oh - and the jug is Schott / Duran borosilicate glass (e.g. like Pyrex), so it's tough and only the bit in contact with the water will be hot.

Con: the lid catch seems a bit flimsy to me. If anything is going to fail I expect that will be first.

I live in a soft water area, so thankfully limescale is not an issue for me. Of course soft water is usually slightly acidic, and my water has a tendency to blacken the inside of plastic kettles. I don't forsee that problem with this one!

[Edit 16Jan] On that last point, it turned out I was wrong. The inside of this kettle started to darken too, so it clearly is not a reaction between the acid water and the kettle as I'd assumed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not user friendly. 2 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase
The design of the spout means it has to be poured at 45 degrees + to get the water out. The spout is too small for a full flow pour and the water builds up against the lid. Should the lid catch not hold you are in serious trouble.

The central locating power spike is never easy to find.

The glass element feels like plastic, but I assume this normal for a "Glass" kettle.

2.0 out of 5 stars This kettle leaks 21 Nov 2013
By CP20
We have had our kettle for about 6 months and it seemed great. Over the past couple of months I have noticed small drops of water when pouring from the kettle and around the power dock. Now it is just pooling water. Other reviews say this is a common issue. Wish we'd read them first before buying this kettle.

1.0 out of 5 stars Would not boil 19 Nov 2013
By Combvh
Bought this kettle from John Lewis. When we got home and tried to boil water the kettle switch would not stay in the on position and I had to hold the switch down to get the kettle to heat up. I allowed the water to cool and tried again, but again the switch malfunctioned. I am returning the kettle tomorrow for a refund.
