Product Description

Product Description

The Breville VKJ469 polished stainless steel Brita filter jug kettle combines modern design with high performance. It is high wattage--3 kilowatt (kW)--keeping the boiling time short to save you time and has a concealed element. This makes it easier to clean and more energy efficient than an immersed element, requiring a lower minimum water level in order to function safely. It has a capacity of 1 litre (l) and features Brita filter technology which works as the kettle is boiling. This Brita filter uses a mixture of carbon and ion exchange resin to remove hardness, chlorine, heavy metals such as lead and copper, and other organic impurities from your water to improve its taste, smell and appearance. The kettle includes a recyclable Brita Maxtra cartridge which features a Memo display that automatically reminds you when your filter cartridge needs to be changed.

The VKJ469 is designed with an extra-large water window indicating water level to help you fill the kettle to the desired amount. And this window illuminates blue to red when boiling, making it easier to judge the correct amount and giving your kettle a sophisticated style. But the colours don't have to stop when the kettle isn't in use as there is Spectra--ever-changing colours when the kettle is on standby mode maintaining the stylish look. The kettle is fitted with a non-slip, 360° rotational base for left and right-handed usage and cord storage to keep your kitchen worktop fuss-free.

2.0 out of 5 stars Form Over Function 28 April 2011
By Alan VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This kettle sure is pretty to look at, with slowly alternating fluorescent colours lighting it up. No one can doubt the usefulness of Brita water filters either, which are a tried and tested way of improving your hot drinks if you have a hard water supply.

I've noticed a few problems with this particular model however. First off, and most worrying, is the build quality. It may have a stainless steel base however the plastics seem flimsy. Both the button operated lid and the boil switch are very lightweight. Furthermore, the kettle we have wobbles slightly on its base - I've checked that there is no obstruction or cable underneath - and cannot solve this. It actually teeters quite a bit when it is coming to the boil - not very reassuring.

Secondly, the filter area is too small. It doesn't fully fill the reservoir underneath unless you top up at least once which means that preparing the kettle is time consuming. The capacity in general is just too small for a family of 4 or more - which is ironic given it's one of the biggest kettles I've owned.

Finally, you can't really use the kettle without the filter. Lifting out the filter holder means you remove the inside area of the spout. This leaves an area from which steam can escape that is far too big. It would have been nice to have this option, as being able to quickly boil a larger quantity of unfiltered water is useful for washing dishes when you have left your immersion switch off.

All in all, I can't recommend it at the price, unless you are only going to be making 1 or 2 hot drinks at a time and absolutely love the design.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for crystal clear water 9 May 2011
By P. McCauley VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This kettle is ideal for those who prefer better quality water in their drinks.

The kettle itself has a quite nice design, and uses a 360 swivel base, which is standard for most modern kettles.
It weighs more than a conventional kettle, but that is due to the stainless steel, and also filter inside of it.
The rubber grip on the handle is good, as it means when pouring a full kettle it wont slip, and even if you hands are slightly wet.

The kettle has LED lights which constantly change between colours, which some might like, but could become annoying at times, and also an unneeded waste of power.

The boiling time is quite good, and will boil it quite fast compared to cheaper models I've used in the past.

The kettle uses a filter system, where the water must go through that before it can be boiled in the base of the kettle. I've read people complain about this, but most filters take a little time, and this only takes like 30secs for a full kettle to filter through before you can boil.

The limit of the kettle is only 1 Litre, which is more ideal for non large boils. Basically this item is more ideal for someone who mainly uses it for cups of tea or coffee, and would prefer nice, crystal clear water, that does actually make the drink taste a little better.

Overall It is quite nice, but anyone thinking of buying it should only for the reasons I have mentioned, and not if they are boiling huge loads all the time.

UPDATE: Having used this kettle for a month it broke. The open lid button when pressed goes in and doesn't come out, which means I cant open the lid to fill the kettle or change the filter. Pretty bad design flaw I think.

1.0 out of 5 stars unreliable 8 Dec 2011
I purchased this kettle in January 2010 only for it to fail in September of the same year. Amazon arranged for a replacement and this has now also broken down (takes the sockets out for the whole house when you try to use it). Given that it was only two months out of guarantee, I spoke to the company who said I could send it to them, but would have to pay for any work done.

Given the high price of this kettle, I find the longevity disappointing to say the least.

The plus points are the filtering system and the light display (although having grown used to it, it only made me think that this was adding to my electric bill every time it changed colour, and I had started to turn it off at the wall).

1.0 out of 5 stars Breville VKJ469 Filter Kettle with Spectra 16 Dec 2011
By Andy
Very dissapointed with this model as the Lid Release Button has developed a fault, just will not open the lid when you need to top up for a hot drink this seems to me a design fault as this has now occured twice, once on my original purchase and now the same fault has developed on its replacement.(now the button jams etc!)
The Spectre filter kettle I'm sure was a to be and interesting concept but this release button system lets it down. Otherwise, it was an ideal replacement for our old filter kettle.
Thanks to Amazon I am able to get a full refund. I hope they send this review and the kettle to Breville. We shall look for another model, in hopes that too does not develope the same fault.

5.0 out of 5 stars magic kettle 11 April 2012
By Penny C
Verified Purchase
I am very pleased with my new Brita Kettle - it cheers up my kitchen with it's ever changing colours! The only thing that worries me slightly us the on/off button is plastic, and very flimsy and I can't see it lasting for the seven years that my previous kettle did - just for this reason. I hope I'm wrong!

4.0 out of 5 stars The psychedelic kettle 23 April 2011
By OEJ & SKY TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
As a happy and healthy tap-water drinker in a hard-water area but not overly troubled by limescale I'm not a believer in the necessity of water filtration but everything else about this product is appealing and practical. Its party trick is its regular change in colour, which it does when boiling water (blue to red followed by green and purple) and it also changes colour on stand-by too. Likely to get friends and neighbours make an approving comment when they come into the kitchen for a cuppa.

As for the very subjective issue of a 'taste test', it's pretty clear that we prefer tea using our old kettle, which is a two-month-old Russell Hobbs 15076. With this Breville using Brita filtered water, the tea tasted milder and had lost its tangy sharp edge. It's possible to use this kettle without the Brita filter but very inadvisable - the kettle takes a long time to switch off after boiling point is reached. That's a waste of electricity and it might even be dangerous too.

A pack of four replacement filters - which if you take the manufacturer's advice will last about four months - costs around fourteen quid.

I can't offer anything specifically negative about it but as a filtration atheist, I can't help but feel that this is rather expensive not only to buy but in particular to run as well - over forty pounds a year in replacement filters. Having said that, there are many thousands of people who do believe in the various benefits of water filtration and for them this kettle should probably be included in their short list. I like it, but I don't love it - so 4 stars.

In summary, if you're unconcerned about water filtering give this a miss. It would be pointless. But if that does matter to you, this can be recommended.
