Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Breville Puratea VKJ436 Stainless Steel and Glass Tea Maker gives you the chance to brew a cup of tea---just the way you like it. Tea drinking has evolved with more and more people enjoying flavours and blends offered by speciality and green teas. And as people’s tea drinking horizons widen and tastes become more discerning, it's essential that the tea is brewed in a way that complements its quality.

The Puratea's lid which can be replaced with a normal kettle lid
Easily remove the tea infuser and add the extra lid to use like a normal kettle

The Puratea includes an integrated tea infuser which raises and lowers into the heated water for optimal brewing strength. Choose from four temperatures to suit the type of tea you use, allowing the flavours to be released to their full potential. This versatile appliance can also be used as a normal kettle so there's no need to cram your kitchen worktop with two appliances.

The Puratea's removable tea infuser
Raise and lower the infuser to make tea to your preference
Different Temperature Settings for Different Teas

As many teas are grown and processed in different environments it is essential that they are brewed at the appropriate temperatures in order to produce the optimum taste and aroma. For example, with white, green or jasmine teas the leaves may become scalded and bitter if the brewing temperature is too high. Alternatively higher temperatures tend to be more suited to types like Earl Grey and English Breakfast.

The Puratea caters for each of these different types of tea. It heats water to either a low, medium, high or boiling temperature so the most favourable brewing temperature can be achieved.

If you're not sure of which setting to choose, it's accompanied by a guide that outlines which settings suit a number of popular teas, or for true tea aficionados it offers the opportunity to experiment with brewing times and temperatures. This versatility applies to the tea used in the tea maker as well. If you don't have loose leaf tea there's no need to worry as it also works with all varieties of bagged tea.

Keeps Warm for 60 Minutes

A key feature of the Puratea is the Keep Warm function which can be activated after the tea has been brewed. The Keep Warm maintains the temperature of the tea at 75 degrees Celsius for 60 minutes after brewing, allowing for those all important refills and top-ups. It also includes an additional lid, so you can remove the tea infuser and use the Puratea as a regular kettle making it a two-in- one.

Stylish Glass Body and Illuminating Digital Controls
The Puratea's four temperature options
Choose from four different temperatures to suit your blend of tea

The Puratea makes a smart addition to your kitchen. It's made from specially hardened glass able to withstand high temperatures which allows you to observe the tea infusing so it's brewed to your preferred requirements. This crystal clear transparency also makes it easy to help you fill the kettle with the desired amount of water. The digital controls illuminate when activated making it easy to use and giving it a sophisticated style emphasised by the sleek stainless steel accents.

The VKJ436 is 2.2 kilowatts (kW) and has a concealed element which makes it easier to clean and more energy efficient than an immersed element, requiring a lower minimum water level in order to function safely. And it's fitted with a non-slip, 360° rotational base for left and right-handed usage and cord storage to keep your kitchen worktop fuss-free.

Easy to Use

Remove the tea infuser from the steel and glass kettle and add the desired amount of fresh, cold water. The maximum capacity is 1 litre (l), the equivalent of approximately four cups so there's plenty to go around. Add your tea of choice to the tea carriage, then insert this into the infuser and place it back in the kettle in the raised position.

Choose from the four temperature settings--low, medium, high or boil--depending on your requirements and press the Start/ Stop button to begin the heating process. The tea infuser can then be raised and lowered at will, in order to achieve your preferred strength.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Breville Puratea VKJ436 Stainless Steel and Glass Tea Maker looks stylish in the modern kitchen environment, but is let down by having a fairly small capacity (only holding enough water for around 4 cups).

The advantage of this tea maker over a traditional kettle, is the keep warm facility, which keeps the tea warm for up to 60 minutes. You can also use the tea maker as a traditional kettle, and it does emit less steam than most kettles I have used in the past, but its strength is with infused / speciality teas.

So, if you enjoy speciality teas, this is a useful tea maker, but if you prefer a quick cuppa with just a tea bag, its probably best to stick with a traditional kettle.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
As a kettle this is brilliant - looks great, can boil to different temperatures for different brews or coffee, and keep the water warm for that top up. And you can use it just as a great kettle (though whether the price is justified for only that purpose, is another matter).

The "killer feature" of this is meant to be the tea-making facility - there's a built-in infuser (although it can be removed to just use as a kettle). If you're making tea for one cup, I'm not sure there's a big advantage over using a regular infuser in your mug; but if you're doing your brew for more than one cup or person, it's fun and time-saving. It's not the easiest thing to clean, but not awful either.

I like it, but I don't think I'd buy another one.

kettle 18 Feb 2012

Hi,I recently bought the breville puratea tea maker.(I had to buy a new kettle as I have recently retired and I'd worn our other kettle out).On unpacking the kettle i noticed it had a 1ltr capacity and I thought it's not big enough, but on reflection it is ideal as it is ok for the two of us.(If you use smaller cups you can serve 4).1 minor niggle is that if you use the tea maker insert, after 2 brews the strainer(which is plastic)tends to discolour(goes brown or stains )which ever is the easier to understand. It has the added bonus that you can set it to wake you up with a cup of tea.(if you can motivate your wife to get up and make it for you)no I jest,it has the facility to keep the water /tea at a set temp for an hour.Overall it is a great product.I would also like to add a thank you to amazon for the fabulous service I had. They were in contact with me from the time I placed my order till it was despatched,a rarity these days.So to sum up,if you are looking for a no nonsense kettle, buy this one.(I take it that the check will be in the post!) tman.
