Boiling water in an instant

The Breville Hot Cup with Variable Dispense is designed to boil a cup of water in a matter of seconds--40 to be precise, five less than the original Hot Cup--meaning great hot drinks at the touch of a button. The innovative patented technology ensures that water is only dispensed once it has reached boiling point, not simply very warm, but around 92 degrees Celsius (dependent on cup size and whether cup has been warmed), making perfect hot drinks every time. In addition, the smooth and continuous flow of water keeps any splashing to a minimum.

By only boiling enough water for the number of cups you need, the Hot Cup with Variable Dispense is economical and energy efficient. There's no boiled water going to waste and it helps you save pennies on electricity bills.

Supersize or downsize your cup with the Variable Dispense

Like your cup of tea a little on the large side? Or just looking for a small slurp of coffee to get you going in the morning? Unique to this Breville Hot Cup model is the Variable Dispense control. This feature allows you to choose from nine different sizes of cup, so there's no need to half-fill a large cup or overspill with a small one.

Simply select the amount of water you require with the Variable Dispense dial located on the top of the unit. Adjust the dial to your chosen setting. For smaller amounts set the dial towards the tea cup icon--the smallest available, and for larger amounts set towards the mug icon--the largest available. If unsure about which setting to use, use a lower setting until you get a better understanding of the amounts.

Manual Stop helps you take control

Providing you with further control is the Manual Stop function. This enables you to interrupt and halt progress at any stage. If you've decided you don't fancy a cuppa after all, press the button immediately to stop the boil sequence. Or even later in the cycle, press it to stop water that is being dispensed. The Manual Stop means you can pour just as much as you want and don't have to worry about overflowing.

Easy to use and easy to clean

The Breville Hot Cup with Variable Dispense features a fast boil 3 kilowatt (kW) concealed element which delivers maximum efficiency and keeps the water tank easy to clean. The large 2 litre (l) capacity water tank is also easy to fill thanks to its lid release button. Press the button down to open and then fill the water tank with fresh, cold water just like you would a kettle.

The extra-large rear water window helps you accurately fill the water tank and once filled, you can place it back on the base facing any angle as it's 360 degree (°) rotational. This means you don't have to line it up in a certain place to function.

Illumination on boil gives a blue hue

When activated, the tank illuminates to give a stylish blue glow to your kitchen. This modern design makes the Hot Cup with Variable Dispense a sophisticated addition to your kitchen worktop. And it continues to look good even when not in use thanks to its gloss black finish with smart stainless steel trim.

Mess is kept to a minimum as the drip tray at the base of the unit collects all stray spillages. It's easily removable for cleaning and is dishwasher safe. Also doing its bit to help keep your kitchen workspace tidy is the cord storage. This coils loose and unused cord under the base of the unit so that it's not swamping your kitchen and taking up unwanted space and the base itself is non-slip so you don't have to worry about it slipping on your work surface.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
OK, so I had the Tefal Quick cup when it first came out and it was good, but the water didn't really stay hot for long.

Then along comes the Breville Hot Cup and everything changes.

The Breville Hot Cup is quite a compact piece of kitchen kit, taking up no more space than my old kettle. The Hot Cup has a detachable drip tray (excellent for me because I have tall cups), a removal tank (with handle on the back for easy holding)and a large opening in top when you open the lid (but for some reason they have put other parts of the tank in there so you can get splash back if you fill it too quickly), also meant to say you get a separate base which is the size of my kettles old base unit.

Set up was a doddle. The only thing you have to put together is the tank onto the base and then the drip dray on the base if you are going to use it.

I filled the Hot Cup with water and set it to the smallest cup size with the easy to use revolving cup sizer, not wanting it to spill over. As soon as you press the boil button (the black button on the picture and when you do the tank lights up Breville Blue, you hear the traditional sound of a kettle boiling, and then seconds after that the water emerges steaming hot. It also has a stop button so you can press that if it looks as if the cup is going to overflow. It took 22 seconds from pressing the button to water appearing then even on the largest cup size the whole thing was over in 30 seconds.

Now having used the Quick Cup in the past I was a bit doubtful over the water temperature, so after using the machine for a few times (to get rid of the new smell and anything trapped inside) I went to smell the water it had just dispensed. I can tell you that I nearly dropped the cup because the steam was so hot it nearly burnt my nose. I can safely say that the water comes out of the Hot Cup absolutely boiling.

The only thing that worried me was the loud hiss it gave after it had dispensed the water but I will get used to that. And after you have used it the tank does stay hot for a while, so you do have to watch where you put your hands, but then again you wouldn't want to cuddle a full kettle after it has boiled.

I think the next test will be to dispense the water and see how long it takes to cool (update - it was about half an hour it was lukewarm but still drinkable).

I can honestly say, if you want a very quick boiling drink then this is the machine for you. I would very highly recommend it.

    Better than a kettle! 21 Nov 2009
By Bob's Mum TOP 500 REVIEWER
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
What a very brillant and clever product! I am simply bowled over by its simplicity and efficiacy of use. Perfect for singletons and families alike (and especially good for those with teenagers like mine who like to boil a whole kettle for one cup of tea then forget to drink it!!).

Straight out of the box, it plugs in on a docking base with retractable cable and attachable drip tray. A nice chrome button opens the back lid where you fill the water reservoir. Then choose the size of mug you want and press the button (not forgetting to place your cup under the spout first!). The Breville Hot cup lights up in beautiful blue light, a low rumble and approx 45 seconds later - one hot cup of water for whatever drink takes your fancy!

I needed to fiddle with the variable amount to match the size of my mugs, but no hardship as there is an instant 'STOP' button. I also needed to angle the unit slightly as it is a little larger than a conventional kettle.

Thrilled with it totally. Pleased with the water temperature (nice hot cup of tea) and noise level (no different from the kettle), but most of all with the speed.

    Cannot recommend this more highly!

After my kettle suddenly stopped working I started researching for a kettle that boiled fairly quickly and looked good. The predecessor to this model got great reviews but had some minor annoyances as reported by people in their reviews. From what I can see they have fixed all of them. I cannot fault this kettle and everyone who has seen or used it so far (1 week) have been really impressed. I would certainly recommend this kettle on looks and functionality. I work from home and have between 6 and 10 cups of coffee a day. It only boils the amount of water you set for the cup size you set. From pressing the button to removing your full cup of hot water it takes my unit 35 seconds. Well done Breville on a superb product.
