5.0 out of 5 stars Breville Hot Cup with Variable Dispense 11 Nov 2009
After my kettle suddenly stopped working I started researching for a kettle that boiled fairly quickly and looked good. The predecessor to this model got great reviews but had some minor annoyances as reported by people in their reviews. From what I can see they have fixed all of them. I cannot fault this kettle and everyone who has seen or used it so far (1 week) have been really impressed. I would certainly recommend this kettle on looks and functionality. I work from home and have between 6 and 10 cups of coffee a day. It only boils the amount of water you set for the cup size you set. From pressing the button to removing your full cup of hot water it takes my unit 35 seconds. Well done Breville on a superb product.

OK, so I had the Tefal Quick cup when it first came out and it was good, but the water didn't really stay hot for long.

Then along comes the Breville Hot Cup and everything changes.

The Breville Hot Cup is quite a compact piece of kitchen kit, taking up no more space than my old kettle. The Hot Cup has a detachable drip tray (excellent for me because I have tall cups), a removal tank (with handle on the back for easy holding)and a large opening in top when you open the lid (but for some reason they have put other parts of the tank in there so you can get splash back if you fill it too quickly), also meant to say you get a separate base which is the size of my kettles old base unit.

Set up was a doddle. The only thing you have to put together is the tank onto the base and then the drip dray on the base if you are going to use it.

I filled the Hot Cup with water and set it to the smallest cup size with the easy to use revolving cup sizer, not wanting it to spill over. As soon as you press the boil button (the black button on the picture and when you do the tank lights up Breville Blue, you hear the traditional sound of a kettle boiling, and then seconds after that the water emerges steaming hot. It also has a stop button so you can press that if it looks as if the cup is going to overflow. It took 22 seconds from pressing the button to water appearing then even on the largest cup size the whole thing was over in 30 seconds.

Now having used the Quick Cup in the past I was a bit doubtful over the water temperature, so after using the machine for a few times (to get rid of the new smell and anything trapped inside) I went to smell the water it had just dispensed.

    Verified Purchase
I bought this kettle a month ago now, and so far it's doing exactly what it's supposed to! I have read the reviews that say they pack up and stop working, but the good ones outweighed the bad, so I decided to go ahead and purchase.
I love it!! It's so easy to use, and stops the others that live with me filling the kettle to the brim, and boiling it every time they want a cup full. I even use it for cooking - ok, so I boil it a couple of times, but it's quicker than filling from the tap and doing it that way.
The blue light is great, especially at night, as I sometimes get up in the night to make a drink and don't want to put the harsh overhead light on. I put the cup under the spout, put the kettle on, and with enough light to see by, I've got enough time to put the teabag and sugar in the cup.
If you make lots of cups of tea every time you boil the kettle, then this probably isn't for you, but if, like me you only make one cup a lot of the time, with the occasional two or three cups, then this is a brilliant idea.
I would think it's also ideal for people who have trouble lifting a normal kettle. I don't lift the hot cup off the base to fill it - I have a plastic jug which I use, it's so much easier.
Contrary to one of the reviews on here, it doesn't boil the whole lot of water every time (no idea where that notion came from!!) the reservoir does get a bit warm if you make two or three cups in a row, as some of the hot water gets pushed back into the reservoir when it resets itself, but it only actually boils the one cup at a time.
As for the plastic taste people have mentioned...yes, we did notice it when we first used it, but it soon went, and now we can't taste it....it's not us getting used to it either, as guests don't notice any difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breville make the perfect kettle 2 Dec 2009
By L Williams TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
    Length: 0:52 Mins
This is the update of the excellent original Hot Cup; bigger tank, larger filling aperture, variable amounts and the ability to stop the flow; it's also hot enough water to make tea and lights up in a funky blue colour! We love it!
Additional cable is stored in the base if you need it.
The video shows the large filling aperture; the original Hot Cup only had a small aperture and was a bit fiddly to fill. The next piece shows the variable quantity dial and then the time taken to boil enough to fill a large mug, although I stop the flow part-way through by pressing the STOP button. You can make tea in a tea-pot but you need to choose the right tea-pot to get the water flow in to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Working for the world's fussiest tea drinker! 25 Nov 2009
    By Caroline P. VINE VOICE
I admit I was rather sceptical of this product. I think I am the fussiest tea drinker in the world and even though I'd read a thumbs up from another fussy tea drinker, I still ....couldn't quite believe it.

The basics: this is an appealing-looking unit, that's really quite compact given that it hold 2 litres. When you operate it, it glows blue and although that is getting 'old' now, for me it looks neat on this unit. It has a variable dispenser, theoretically from small cup to mug and you turn the dial to suit. This is the one bugbear for me with it - the 'max' is just not enough for my favourite mugs, leaving the tea looking a little lost and lonely with 1/3 of the cup unfilled. You could, I suppose, re-activate it and top it up - but if you're going to do that and wait another minute or so, the kettle starts to look more sensible. It is surprisingly irritating, and that is why I've dropped it one star. If you are less of a tea-guzzler, this may not be an issue for you at all.

And how does it perform? Well, when you first use it, it tells you to fill it up to the maximum and dispense cups until the machine empties. Thereafter it's "ready for use". Well, it's just ok and if I'd reviewed it at that point, I wouldn't have been a fan. Basically, the water container starts off really quite "pongy" in a nasty, plasticky way and this has a small - but noticeable - effect on the quality of your drink. However, this passes within a few days and since then I've been agreeably surprised that the quality of the tea it makes meets my exacting standards. It is rewardingly quick and - to my ears - I would swear I hear the water bubble, suggesting it is boiling. I haven't measured the actual temperature.
