Looking to whip up a mouthwatering treat? Opt for a hand blender--the smaller, more portable alternative to a blender. Unlike mini-choppers or processors, this type of blending favours foods with a higher water content. It's ideal for fixing soups, sauces, milkshakes and smoothies. You can also use it with fruits, vegetables and softer foods.

The Breville VHB063 goes one step further than most hand blenders by being cordless. The blender has a detachable leg, which is dishwasher-safe and made from stainless steel. This is less corrosive and more resistant to rusting than other materials. It also contains antibacterial properties that keep it hygienic. The stainless steel, four-tip blade is positioned inside the head for safety. By keeping it neatly out of the way, this also acts as an anti-splash guard to help reduce mess.

The main body of the blender has a complementary stylish and durable chrome and black finish and contains the professional-standard 800 watt (W) motor. The handle's ergonomic design delivers a solid and comfortable grip.

Recessed buttons prevent the motor from starting if it's accidentally knocked over or dropped. These buttons are also soft-touch for prolonged use. In addition, the soft-touch easy-grip front and back panels help prevent wet hands from slipping while using the blender.

The set includes a 700 ml measuring beaker and a charging stand. A blade cap is provided for safe storage.

    This is an excellent quality blender, nice and weighty, not like some other "flimsy" brands. It is quite powerful, easy to clean and has its own stand. The stand takes both the motor hand-piece, plus the blender part, and the plastic "beaker" fits nicely over this. It is easy to use - don't need to have it plugged in for it to work, so the cable doesn't get in the way when using it. It is very stylish, and would look good in any kitchen. Highly recommended - I would give it 10/10.

    This is a seriously good-looking piece of equipment, with a nice heft to it and easily stored - comes with its own integral stand/charger and is handsome enough to be out on the worktop. It cleans easily too.

    Though the blade is small, it seems to do its blending job fine, certainly making home-made soups far easier. The one quibble that one of my family had was this: like some lawnmowers, it needs starting by pressing 2 buttons at once, after which you can stop pressing one. I don't know if that's a safety feature. But some people, apparently, like to blend in short bursts, in order to be sure of stopping when they get just the right texture. For them, this feature is a bit of a pest because every time they restart, they have to do the press-both-buttons thing.

    Ar £45 though, this is a pretty expensive item, and good as it looks, if I'd had to pay for it, I would check other brands first to see if there isn't something equally good but cheaper.

    I haven't had a hand blender before and I was very curious to try one and see what they are like to use.

    The Breville VHB063 hand blender is very neat and solidly made. It has a useful power stand that holds the two halves, a lid for the blender head so it doesn't get dusty and a container for making smoothies in. I have found the blender head easy to clean. My only (and this could be me) gripe is that the power grip has two buttons one marked as a power button and one with an open padlock. I keep assuming the open padlock needs to be pressed to unlock the two halves, but that's not the case, you need to press both buttons for the blender to work. Sigh. Other than that would happily recommend this blender to other people.
