If you're looking to whip up something mouth-watering in a moment, opt for a jug blender, the bigger alternative to a hand blender. The Breville VBL050 Intelligent Blender easily tackles all of these kitchen jobs with a continuous blending design that creates a turbulent flow for maximum results. It also takes the guess-work out of the process thanks to eight clever pre-set functions. These settings are programmed based on expert knowledge from top professional chefs and are comprised of chopping, blending, pureeing, smoothies, cakes, dips, shakes and ice crushing. With these core settings, there's no need to estimate how long your blending requires, standing over the unit and checking every few seconds, helping prevent unevenly blended dishes. In addition to the eight pre-set functions, there is a variable manual speed so you can blend to your own requirements and a pulse function for short, sharp bursts of blending power. The power base unit is in a stylish white/chrome finish which neatly complements contemporary and modern-looking kitchens. Inside this base is a powerful 800 watt (W) motor which powers the serrated stainless steel blades, a material known for being less corrosive and more resistant to rusting than others and boasts antibacterial properties that keep it hygienic. Sitting on top of the unit is the plastic 1.5 litre (l) square contour jug, the unusual shape designed for continuous flow and transparent to ensure clear observation. And completing the kit is the two-piece lid enabling you to add ingredients while still blending. The unit has non-slip feet and comes with some great recipes to get you inspired in the kitchen.

I got my one from the Amazon Warehouse section for £53 and I have to say I think it's very good value for money. It's sturdy and nice looking. It makes a lot of noise but that's fair for a 800w motor.

I had a Breville for ten years or so and it did the job well enough. Of recent I have been using it a lot and needed to retire it to the bin, You will be sadly missed old friend. Why move to another brand? The VBL
050 is even better so far. I Only use it to make smoothies. It does a great job and just as important easy to clean. I have only had it about a week and so far it's top. What more can I say great value and I would recommend it.

For me with anything electrical it's all about how easy a product is to use, I loathe anything complicated, and the Breville Intelligent Blender couldn't be any easier. Decent sized jug with enough capacity to blend a good pot full of soup or versatile enough to mix a single Mojito. Chops everything from nuts to ice and has a large range of other functions from pulse to puree. Everything is pre-programmed so you don't have to think about it, you just press the relevant function key and walk away but; you can stop the programme at any time. Variable speed control and not too noisy when in motion. Simple to read the function keys and they're large enough to see without having to bend down to look at what you're doing. I did find the lid difficult, it's a very tight fit, and taking the stopper out isn't that easy. Hopefully as I use the Breville more and more they'll become a little more flexible. Having only every used a hand blender I have to say that I wouldn't ever go back to that. This is a large blender though, takes up quite a bit of room, you might want to think about that if you're stuck for storage space.
