I bought this kettle as a replacement for an earlier Breville Spectra kettle, so thought it would be fine. However, the water heated with this kettle takes on a nasty chemical taste. This is regardless of how any times I have cleaned or descaled it over the last 3-4 weeks. The only conclusion I can reach is that a chemical compound from the plastic body of the kettle is tainting the water. Not something that could be missed by anyone in testing at Breville! I contacted Breville customer services, specifically about the taste, their advice being:
"We would advise that you should fill the kettle, and add two tablespoons of Bicarbonate of soda, with warm water and leaving to stand for several hours before discarding the water. Another suggestion is 2/3rd either lemon juice or white wine vinegar and 1/3rd water and boil it a few times. This should get rid of any taste. If this does not work we suggest that although the kettle is new that you de-scale it."
Yep, did all these. No effect. I replaced the kettle once, via Amazon's return policy... However, I've left it too long to get a refund, so this one is going in the bin and I will be buying another brand.
