Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Breville PT49 two slot four slice black and stainless steel toaster is a sleek and smart addition to any kitchen boasting a number of helpful features. It has variable browning control which allows you to choose how dark or light you like your toast and variable width slots allowing breads of various thicknesses to be fully toasted. So whether it's a small slice or something a bit bulkier--all sizes are properly accommodated. Features include a reheat button which brings cooled toast back up to temperature without burning it; a defrost button which automatically lengthens the toasting time to allow for the defrosting of frozen bread and a mid-cycle cancel button allowing you to stop the toasting process as and when you want to. Remove smaller items without burning your fingers thanks to the extra-high lift which raises the bread carriage for easier access. And keep crumb mess to a minimum with the removable crumb tray which collects any crumbs that may fall from the bread as you toast it. The PT49 is also fitted with illuminated blue buttons for easy use, LED toast progress illumination so you can see at a glance how much longer the toasting cycle will last, cord storage and a non-slip base.

    A Great Toaster 30 Jan 2010
Bought this to replace our old burnt-out 2-slice toaster. After reading reviews on other sites, decided on this 4-slice Breville, as we wanted a toaster that takes larger slices of bread. It looks good, does the job well and the blue led lights for countdown are a good idea. Its great to do 4 slices at a time and like some others have said, it sits on the counter looking like a little ocean liner! Love it to bits!

This is, without doubt, the worst toaster I have ever used. The heat/temperature control is virtually useless, the bread usually burns on setting 1 which is the lowest setting. The bread becomes trapped inside the toaster and usually has to be pried out with a knife and often involves burning fingers on the hot metal in doing so. It has very big gaps around the 'stainless steel' interior toast slots and the black outer casing where crumbs become trapped giving the toaster a very unattractive look. Finally, the crumb tray may as not be not there for all the good it does, it is too small and crumbs fall through the gaps on either side.

Just got my new toaster and I am happy with its looks although it has definitely no stainless steel trims (it is all plastic painted to look like stainless steel, even the loading handle.) I think this is important for people to know as it is misleading to say stainless steel trim.

The overall size is quite large - larger than expected. Length 31.5 cm x 19 cm width x 21.5 cm height. The cable is rather short, at least compared to my old toaster. It is just 53 cm.

The potential problem for users is that the cable end is on the right side as you are viewing the controls. That means you have to pass it underneath the toaster to bring it out the other end by which time you only have about 26 cm left so measure the height of your socket or you'll be in trouble. You could theoretically put it the other way round if you do not mind diving over the worktop to work the loading mechanism which would be near the back wall if you set it that way.

Toasting test: I used Tesco's white medium sliced bread. It had been previously frozen but had thawed prior to use. I used two slices on the near slot and one in the far slot (I ran out of bread when my little one decided to have bread for lunch.) The setting was a medium one: 3. The toast was overcooked on the top but was uncooked at the bottom. The outside was a nice colour but the inside (the one towards the centre of the toaster) was burned. Well, that was interesting! I would have understood such a result with a bagel setting (some toasters have this extra setting) but not with a standard toaster. The single slice which I had put in the centre of the far slot came overcooked on both sides.

Taste test: bread was crisp and crunchy apart from the left front slice which was dismal.

I shall be returning this toaster tomorrow because although I love the blue lights, I am not convinced it is quality and it does not reach the socket in my tiny kitchen (it would if I turned it but then it would get splattered by my cooker.)

I hope you found this report helpful.
