Make Ironing Easier with the Breville VIN281 Extreme Steam Digital Steam Generator

Are you someone who hates to iron? Or do you find ironing to be a calming, therapeutic task?

The new range of Breville Extreme Steam steam irons are designed for both types of people, and everyone in between. These pressurised, continuous-fill steam generators make ironing fast, easy and efficient.

This iron will help you tackle tough creases, faster. How so? Well, steam generators use a separate large water boiler to heat water. This produces large volumes of steam and heat that are transferred to the handheld iron.

As a result, you get more steam, and it lasts longer, compared to the steam of a basic iron. Steam-gen irons can be pricier than basic irons, but many consumers agree that the results justify the investment. Compared to basic steam irons, steam generator irons hold three-to-four times more water, produce twice as much steam, reducing creases faster and more effectively, amd have lighter iron units, which are easier to use, because the water is held in a detachable tank. A steam generator iron lets you churn quickly through large piles of laundry. You'll be hard-pressed to find a steam iron that performs to this standard.

Get Smoother Ironing, with a Stainless Steel Soleplate

The Breville VIN281 features a stainless steel soleplate, up to 100g/min steam rate and 4.5 bar pressure. The stainless steel soleplate creates a smooth glide, helping ensure even heat distribution across your ironing.

There's so much to love about this iron. Additional features of the VIN281 include a 2m cord, Vertical steam, Steam trigger lock, Detachable water tank and Easy-to-use manual controls. Some people find using manual controls easier than using digital controls. But if you would rather have digital controls, check out the Breville VIN170 steam generator.

Beyond its exceptional technical performance, the Extreme Steam range is eye-catching and sleek--a refreshing break from the usual bulky and clunky steam generator designs.

Choosing Between Pressurised vs. Non-Pressurised Steam-Gen Irons?

All steam generators use a separate large water boiler to heat water and generate large volumes of steam and heat, transferred through a tube to a handheld iron unit. They produce steam for a longer amount of time than a basic steam iron, allowing you to tackle tough creases, faster.

There are three different types of steam-generator irons: pressurised, non-pressurised and pressurised, continuous-fill. The Breville VIN281 is an example of a pressurised, continuous-fill iron.

As with all steam generators, this is far larger than a normal iron due to the water reservoir/stand. The actual iron part is quite light and attached to the base via a hose.

Once you've filled up the removable reservoir and fired it up it only takes a short time for the light to come on to tell you it's the right temperature to start ironing. In use, it works well as an iron, and as you'd expect and it's easier to use than a conventional iron and gets through the work faster (which is a bonus as who actually enjoys ironing?!) This unit does seem to generate a bit more steam than others I've used and can get a bit cloudy for a second - it also seemed a bit louder, but again that's an issue with any steam generator. You can turn the steam off, but that defeats the point really. The controls are a dial type rather than digital but this fits with the styling and gives it an almost retro feel.

One potential problem is that there's no locking clip for the iron to the base - not an issue if it's cold, but you'd have to keep an eye on it while it's hot as it could cause damage to the surrounding area.

I've used better steam generators, but they have been at least £200 more expensive. The fact that this is under £100 means it is really good value for money. It's lacking some features that more expensive models have, but to be honest I'd rather save money than have features I may or may not use.

It's a good product for a very reasonable price, recommended as an entry level steam generator.

Steam generating irons are so good.
The iron itself is not heavy, nice big tank means a full load can be done without a refill.
However the tank is flimsy and will probably break through repeated use.
The sole plate is not a smooth as Philips.
Simply Philips at similar prices are far superior in performance.

I haven't used a steam generator iron for a couple of years now, our old one just died on us and I've used standard iron ever since.

I remember our previous one being over £200 and that was one of the lower end ones, as with all products they get cheaper over time and this one has a RRP of less than half that.

It has produced fantastic results and I'm once again a steam Generator user.

One small annoyance is the noise it makes when heating up, but it's pretty quiet once it's warmed up.

You could spend a lot more, but this ticks all the boxes and works as good as I would want an Iron to.

5 Stars from me.

I don't like ironing but I seem to be doing more and more of it these days so I was glad to receive this Steam Generator. It's interesting and a little disconcerting to use at first because the iron itself is very light. The instructions tell you to position the steam generator on your ironing board if you have room or on something level with the ironing board. Well there is no way I could fit this beast on the ironing board and still have room to iron! but I put it somewhere close by, filled it up and pressed the button. It takes a few minutes for the boiler to heat up the water in the reservoir (which holds 3-4 times as much water as a steam iron. The iron is attached to this by a thick cable that the steam travels up and into the iron. In the instructions it says you don't have to press the trigger all the time as enough steam would come out in between times but I found that if I didn't constantly press the trigger then no steam/heat came out of it at all. I ironed a lot of cotton with it and it did a decent job but I didn't feel that it did any better job than my regular steam iron. There are creases in cotton that are difficult to remove without the aid of an ironing spray.

Apparently there are three different types of steam-generator irons: pressurised, non-pressurised and pressurised, continuous-fill. The Breville VIN281 is an example of a pressurised, continuous-fill iron, and has a 100g/min steam rate and a 4.5 bar pressure. 4/5

This is a stylish steam generator iron which is very easy to use. It arrived boxed in the usual eco friendly egg box. Instructions and a water jug included. Read leafelt and booklet. Remove base plate covering, fill the removable water tank with tap water, set temp and steam level, switch on wait until the green light goes off, press the steam button and off you go. Ironing has never been easier. Creases melt away as the iron glides across them like a steam train down the track. Sure Portillo uses one of these.

I have a Philips steam generator which is more expensive and not as well designed or as controllable as this Breville Extreme. Good stuff!

This is the second steam generator iron that I have used and this one has certainly got great steam power. It glides effortlessly over very crumpled items and does a wonderful job of flattening and smoothing them out. The iron itself is very light. I usually like heavier irons, but this has got enough steam power to make a difference.

It is best to have the reservoir filled to the maximum point at the start to save you running out of steam. The reservoir itself is quite large but no problem as I keep it out permanently as too much hassle to put away and quite big to store. There is a blue light that flashes to tell you when you can start to use and a light that lets you know when you need more water. Other than that it is simple to use, nothing complicated.

All in all it is a good iron for the money (costing under £100) and it does makes ironing a faster job which is beneficial to me and most folk.
