I've lost count of the number of toasters I've had over the years which toast unevenly, or which cannot accommodate all sizes of bread, or which stop working.
This one is only a couple of days in use so it's yet to stop working, but the elements are, as usual, not evenly red. It will take thick slices so that's very good. But slot length and height is not enough. The other 4-slot ones are propbably similar. For reference, slot width, with the variable width at maximum, will permit 30mm thick slices. Slot length allows 140mm to fit in, and on full depression the slot height allows 130mm to fit in. The net result, is that unless you use squarish, smallish loaves, you have to reduce the size of the slices and use all 4 slots or toast them twice in 2 slots (turning over once). That is hardly energy efficient - either way, it doubles it. Cable is too short, too, if like us you have a socket to the left (the cable exits the toaster on the right with the controls facing you. and there needs to be more cable to avoid incinerating the wall unit above).
My old toaster was a cheapo with 2 long slots so it would accommodate any length and height but unless slices were quite thin they would jam in it.
With a max budget of £50 I looked at all the reviews, and there are very few toasters with 2 long slots which are also wide or variable, and also well-reviewed. The Kenwood Miro looked promising but it seems to have a propensity to trip the electrics too easily.
So I guess that this Breville is as good as it gets. But it is pathetic that no-one seems able to design a toaster with the all-round (and not unreasonable) functionality I seek. I don't care if it is retro, or has a pearlescent finish, or a fancy name, or if it's made in China, I just want one which (a) toasts reasonably evenly (b) will take 2 or more slices each up to approx 140 x 160 x 25 mm thick (c) lasts longer than a year (d) doesn't cause electrical faults (e) hopefully costs under £50.
As I said in the caption: Why is there no 'perfect' toaster? (Apart from the oven grill, of course). Apologies for the rant, but.....ggggrrrrr
UPDATE 29 March - RETURNED
Hopeless Toaster. Toasting was uneven to start with, after 1 month it got worse. Returned to Amazon and obtained refund - I'll try another one of different manufacture.
