I'm quite impressed by this Breville kettle, it looks smart, unlike white plastic kettles, and it pours nicely. It is also noticeably quieter than the Krups kettle that it replaces (not that that would be difficult!).

It looses a star however as the gauge doesn't go down 1 cup, which makes it harder to use the bare minimum of water to make a cuppa. The spout that makes it nice to pour also makes it hard to fill with water by the spout, though this wouldn't be so bad if you have a mixer tap.

Finally the lid handle, kettle handle and base top are all metal effect plastic, which although necessary for insulation, may not keep its looks in the long term.

As this is my first Breville device only time will tell with regard to reliability, however having read numerous reviews on Amazon brand/price seems to no bearing on reliability. Buying a kettle, it seems, is pot luck.

Update 1: 2 years on and it's still working fine, still no sign of deterioration on the chrome effect plastic.

Update 2: 3 years on and the handle has come free from the lid, but everything else functions as well as before.

I can see from some other people's posts that they have had the same problem with the lid handle. Being a engineer's son I can easily see that the main cause of the problem is that Breville are using too short a screw for the lid handle, meaning that the screws don't extend into the part of the shaft that is reinforced (with splines). I've no idea whether this is just an oversight on Breville's part or fault introduced by trying to reduce costs, either way I shall be contacting them about the problem and to ask them for a replacement lid!

Really love this kettle. It boils quickly and has a good pouring spout and well designed handle. Not particularly quiet but this is compensated by the other positive features such as lovely shape. Easy to keep clean unlike my previous stainless steel kettle

I am very pleased with this kettle. It looks great -nice lines, lovely rich opalescent red colour, contrasting well with the stainless steel finish on the spout and handle. Functionally it is top class. It feels solid, the lid has a positive "clunk" action when being removed and replaced, and filling is very easy through the top. The lack of a hinged flip-top lid does not bother me in the slightest. The lid is easily held when filling the kettle and the handle itself is not unduly hot after recent use if it heeds to be refilled then.

There is a large dead space above the max water level, presumably to ensure boiling water does not bubble out of the spout, but has a small enough footprint that it doesn't take up excessive space on the kitchen worktop. It feels solidly seated when on its stand -and swivels on it effortlessly. It boils water very fast, and can take only a small amount of water if that's all you need to boil.

Contrary to what is mentioned in another review, the body of the kettle is all metal. It has a plastic-feel paint finish externally but the interior is metal from top to bottom, not plastic. It's a very solid and rigid shell and feels very robust.

The water volume scale is marked with cup symbols, not litres or milllitres. I calibrated them out to be 200ml per cup with graduations of lines in between 2, 4, 6, and 8-cup symbols, representing 200ml increments. I'd have preferred markings in mls but I know where I am now if I need to use a specified amount of boiling water when following a recipe.

Overall I'm very happy with this kettle which looks good and works as well as it looks.

    Highly recommended.

The Breville Opula Collection Stainless Steel Jug Kettle is a strong, sturdy and stylish kettle with a capacious 1.7 litre capacity. Aesthetically, the kettle looks very pleasing to the eye, with its minimalist 'functional' design incorporating a high quality gloss colour. Whether the kettle will be kept in a contemporary or traditional style of kitchen, the classic design that the kettle utilises will make it fit in perfectly in almost all styles of decor.

Upon opening up the kettle, you notice that the lid is very tightly fitted, making it require a little more effort than usual to open. Certainly not much of an issue in itself, and something that has its own pros and cons. As mentioned above, the kettle can accommodate up to 1.7 litres of water in one boil, which is around two-thirds of the space within the kettle. The rest of the empty space within the kettle is required to safely contain the sudden build-up in steam (which is let out of the spout in a controlled fashion) as well as accommodating the rapid bubbling of the water upon boiling the water.

The minimum amount of water that the kettle can boil at any one time is approximately one cup full. This is pretty standard for a kettle. However, the handy water-level gauge located on the side of the kettle only starts at the '4 cup' level, which is a little annoying to say the least. Ok, so you can judge the water level yourself by opening the lid up and looking inside, but not having the gauge starting at say 2 cup fulls, is just a little strange. Again, not really much of an issue, but one that's probably worth mentioning nevertheless.

When the kettle is turned on, the small red indicator on the 'on switch' glows brightly, as well as the water gauge illuminating for added clarity.
