1.0 out of 5 stars Espresso frustration!, 7 Jan 2008
By I. A. Brown (Leicester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I got a Breville CM5 Cafe Series Espresso from Comet too. It looks great, feels well made, and on the odd occasion I can get water through the grounds, it makes a lovely espresso.

BUT (and it's a big but) at least 75% of the time I don't even get a single drip out of this machine - the pump runs and the pressure builds, but no coffee emerges. Then, when I finally give up and remove the filter holder, hot coffee explodes everywhere, even after it's been switched off for five minutes.

The problem seems to be with the double-wall filter, which blocks incredibly easily, especially on the two-cup filter for some reason. I've now tried six different brands of proper espresso-grind coffee, varied the amount of coffee and the degree of tamping but to little avail - only occasionally do I actually get an espresso! The fact that the machine comes with a special tool for cleaning the filter holes may point to a problem with the design?

After two weeks of espresso-free frustration, this attractive but ultimately useless machine is going back to Comet and I'm getting a Gaggia Classic instead, which is probably what I should have gone for in the first place.

NOT recommended.
