My husbane eats litres and litres of ice cream so I thought I'd hit the perfect Christmas prezzy idea with this Breville Soft Servce Ice cream maker. How wrong could I be?!? - I'd done a bit of research on ice cream makers and basically you have to chill the cannister to 'freeze' the ice cream on most models under £80, but with this one, you have to measure the temp of your freezer and then freeze for the appropriate number of hours, and you must be exact, not under or over or the consistence of the ice cream is lost! - we duly did this and chilled the mixture appropriately as well, but when it finally came to the exciting bit of churning up the mixture and dispensing 'Whippy' style ice cream, we listened to the noisy mixer for 20 mins, not right, 25, not right and on it went, but still all we were getting was little dollops of runny ice cream. I loved the idea, but I just can't recommend this, it's too much hassle and even if you follow the instructions exactly, you still don' get nice ice cream. Sorry Breville..!

This soft ice-cream maker was a gift for our son at Christmas. We thought it would be great fun having soft, whirly ice cream and a novelty when friends came to play. However, as another reviewer has already said, it was too much hassle and the results were not just disappointing, they were appalling. Having left the thermometer in the freezer overnight to check the temperature of our particular freezer, the canister then had to be frozen for 24 hours. Then we realised that the ice cream mixture had to be chilled overnight, too, but you mustn't 'overfreeze' the canister which makes the whole process a logistical nightmare. I know that many ice cream makers require a canister to be frozen before use, but this just became unmanageable. When we finally got the whole process working and tried to make the ice cream, the results were awful. The instructions said 20 -25 minutes for the ice cream to be ready depending on the temperature of the canister this could be slightly longer. After 25 minutes there was only cold, runny slush; after 35 minutes it was cold, icy slush and after 45 minutes the mixture refused to come out through the tap! We never saw any 'soft' ice cream and our son was very disappointed - we did try several times!
I always thought Breville were a reputable manufacturer but I now know better. I have contacted Breville via their customer services option on their website and they haven't even bothered to reply.
I can not recommend this product at all unless you are a masachist and enjoy putting yourself through torment and agony with no tangible result (and an inconsolable child with yet another Christmas present that failed to deliver the goods).
I will seriously consider whether I buy any Breville items in the future.

bought this machine in anticipation of lovely soft swirly ice cream for my hubby and son. Dream on, as it wont churn if the bowl is slighty over frozen, leaving a gloopy mess to clean up. It doesnt come out in soft swirls when you do ( if your lucky ) get the mixture and temp correct, it sort of splodges out in 2 inch lengths. Ive never seen such a badly designed piece of kitchen equipment, and shame on you Breville for letting it loose on the open market place for us unsuspecting public to buy. It has put me off Breville for a reliable maker in the future.
