4.0 out of 5 stars Good budget Scope with nice extra 22 Jan 2012
Got this for a bargain in Lidl (£50) and at £88 here still quite reasonable
This is a junior microscope, small and lightweight
The kit comes with a 3 (4X 10X and 40X) objectives and 2 eye pieces (5X and 16X) which when combined gives a 1000 X magnification
The biggest bonus for me is the MicrOkular (a USB web cam attachment)
Ok this is only VGA but at £88 this is not bad at all for me
The kit also has a series of slides, a brine shrimp micro hatchery including salt feed and eggs
It also has has a microtome to create thin slices of things...not very effective

Optics are reasonable
The platform is not so robust
The two light sources are handy for transmitted and reflected light microscopy

Ok all in all a good bargain especially with the webcam attachment, which is detected out of the box in Linux, allowing budget time lapse microscopy for under £100...

EDIT..4 month follow up

Ok had it now for 4 months, it remains useful. With spring here we are now able to observe tadpoles at close up, and see fascinating aspects (the gills, lateral the eye development, the heart beat, the breathing. I am using Linux, and Cheese is able to take video well. It stopped working for a while but seems to have fixed itself with a recent update...thoroughly recommend videoing this creature live...it has really stimulated made my daughter (aged 9) to hunt more creatures for investigation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab Scope 23 April 2012

This is a really brilliant microscope, I purchased it for my 8 year old cousin and he was able to get to grips with it straight away. For those who haven't used a microscope before don't forget to use the low powered eye piece with the high powered lower lens. The computer cd loaded without any glitches and the picture from the microscope on the computer screen was superb. Although its very good even without the camera. I wish I had this when I was a child.
If there is a down side its that you will need mains power for the lighting, as oppose to the old style scope which used a mirror and natural light to see the object.

3.0 out of 5 stars Biolux NV 20x-1280x Microscope 3 Feb 2012
By dickt
This product is quite satisfactory for what it is - a small, relatively cheap microscope for amateur use. I initially cursed the European power plug, but there again it is a European product so you have to make allowances. That aside it works very well for the most part and for the sort of uses that someone starting off in this sort of hobby might need. Magnification is good and variable to suit a number of situations although I do find the sliding Barlow lens arrangement a bit on the crude side. The instrument seems very stable and both the stage and clamping mechanisms work vey smoothly. I haven't done too much with the PC attachmenst as yet, but what I have done does look to have lost a significant amount of definition, although maybe this will improve with practice. So not a bad tool up to now. Pity that I could have bought it £30 cheaper at a Lidl supermarket had I had one nearer to me.
