5.0 out of 5 stars Best children's book ever, 22 Jun 2005
By A Customer
A classic. I got this through the school Bookworm Club in 1980. (There was a TV series about that time, which I didn't see.)

Three brothers, Robin, John (Big John) and Harold (Little John) are staying with a well-meaning but stifling maiden aunt over the spring school holidays: their parents are in India. The time is I guess late spring sometime in the twenties.

Rather than return to school, they decide to disappear into the 11,000 acres of Brendon Chase, a royal hunting forest somewhere in the SE of England, taking with them the gardener's rifle... They go to ground in a huge, hollow oak and the story follows their survival, adventures and discoveries over the next 3 seasons, and their wraith-like brushes with the world outside the forest.

Characters include: the dogged but bungling Sergeant Bunting; the boys' adopted dog, Bang; the charcoal burner Smokoe Joe, and Angela - the doctor's daughter and Big John's muse.

Anyone who wants to experience the sounds and textures of the countryside before traffic, the Common Agricultural Policy, and industrial forestry took over will love this book. It's a breath of simplicity in a consumer driven world which has almost annihilated childhood. As the quote has it in all BB's books- 'Look ye also while life lasts.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless classic, 13 Mar 2006
By Cheeky Monkey (NW England) - See all my reviews
I first read this book when I was 11 following the TV series and thought it was absolutely magical as it provided a gateway to another world. Not just another time, but a place where the sun shone all summer and the winter was deep snow, a place where wildlife was abundant and a place could escape from the mundane world of adults. Of course the real world isn't like that and despite reading it several times the book became lost over the years.
I rediscovered it following a drunken reminiscence conversation with an old pal and bought it for several nephews and nieces. While they were a bit sceptical about reading a book written in the 1940s where children routinely killed and skinned wild animals, trapped wild animals for their pelts, took rare birds' eggs and collected rare butterflies, each one of them fell for its charm and each loved it. I figured it was time to read it again for myself and even though I'm now in my mid-30s Brendon Chase remains the magical world I remembered it to be. The book has drama, joy, pathos and real adventure and despite the mass slaughter of the animals I truly believe it will inspire children to love nature. Brendon Chase is haunting, enchanting and makes you feel alive just reading it. Go on, indulge yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dangerously Subversive Masterpiece, 1 May 2001
By A Customer
I was read this book by my mother as a child and thought then it was the greatest book ever. Thirty years later I am just as entranced . . even though it's effect on me has been cataclysmic. For the past 20 years I've been able to think of little else but living off the land, much to the horror of friends, relatives and teachers. Fortunately for me, I managed eventually to put this partially into practice (see 'Urban Dreams; Rural Realities'), but I still regard it as a deeply subversive book which could easily infect an innocent city child with a love of nature, determination to be independent and a healthy suspicion of authority. Now, as I furtively read chapters to my seven year old son at night, I can only hope that his mother and social services don't find out . . . In my view this still is, quite simply, the greatest children's book of all time.
