5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless classic, 13 Mar 2006
By Cheeky Monkey (NW England) - See all my reviews

I first read this book when I was 11 following the TV series and thought it was absolutely magical as it provided a gateway to another world. Not just another time, but a place where the sun shone all summer and the winter was deep snow, a place where wildlife was abundant and a place could escape from the mundane world of adults. Of course the real world isn't like that and despite reading it several times the book became lost over the years.
I rediscovered it following a drunken reminiscence conversation with an old pal and bought it for several nephews and nieces. While they were a bit sceptical about reading a book written in the 1940s where children routinely killed and skinned wild animals, trapped wild animals for their pelts, took rare birds' eggs and collected rare butterflies, each one of them fell for its charm and each loved it. I figured it was time to read it again for myself and even though I'm now in my mid-30s Brendon Chase remains the magical world I remembered it to be. The book has drama, joy, pathos and real adventure and despite the mass slaughter of the animals I truly believe it will inspire children to love nature. Brendon Chase is haunting, enchanting and makes you feel alive just reading it. Go on, indulge yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dangerously Subversive Masterpiece, 1 May 2001
By A Customer
I was read this book by my mother as a child and thought then it was the greatest book ever. Thirty years later I am just as entranced . . even though it's effect on me has been cataclysmic. For the past 20 years I've been able to think of little else but living off the land, much to the horror of friends, relatives and teachers. Fortunately for me, I managed eventually to put this partially into practice (see 'Urban Dreams; Rural Realities'), but I still regard it as a deeply subversive book which could easily infect an innocent city child with a love of nature, determination to be independent and a healthy suspicion of authority. Now, as I furtively read chapters to my seven year old son at night, I can only hope that his mother and social services don't find out . . . In my view this still is, quite simply, the greatest children's book of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, 16 Nov 2006
By Em (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I first encountered this book in my early teens - and it still comes out at least once a year now I'm in my thirties. Though other books by 'BB' are good, 'Brendon Chase', the story of three brothers running away to the wild wood to live as outlaws is in a league of its own, deserving to be much better known. If you love the countryside, had dens/hideouts as a kid and ate many undercooked sausages/bacon whilst being smoked by a campfire - this book is for you!!
