This is a WORKbook, emphasis on WORK. If you want a "guide" that says clearly "you are this age, shape and colouring so you should wear this style and colour and accessorise it thus", this isn't the book you want. Brenda's book is loaded with workbook exercises to help develop your fashion intelligence and for you to learn how to avoid the dreaded fashion faux pas (the ones in your closet now). You could become so good at identifying the styles that Brenda defines, you could become a fashion guru to others in the fitting room (but you'll have to do all the exercises faithfully for that possibility). Many of the book's exercises are a lot of fun. It is very helpful in helping a person regain their confidence in knowing how to buy clothing. Mostly, you'll be encouraged to get out there now (or as soon as you get to a particular excerise) rather than waiting for that weight loss or big event to force yourself into the fitting room. It IS also very good at identifying and defining your personal style. But if you want to know NOW what to wear, skip the exercises and read the book right through.

I have read many "wardrobe" books and usually manage to find a tip or two. This book is rather different and offers several different approaches to finding your style and moving on from the full wardrobe but nothing to wear syndrome. Yes, it is American and there are pros and cons with that but I can live with that. Some reviewers have mentioned lack of photos but actually I think the quirky drawings add the fun without haveing photos of clothes which would date. This is a book to come back to unlike most wardrobe books which date so quickly. Hurrah for Brenda I say!

I give this book 5 stars easily, and am surprised the other very good review only gave it 3 stars. This isn't the book for you if you want recommendations for specific numbers and types of garments. What it excels at is making you think about why you may not be dressing well, and changing your perspective on clothes, with lots of suggestions about new things to try. Recommended.
