Book Description

1 Sep 2003
Kinsel walks the reader through the same affirming process that the author's clients experience before they go shopping. Readers assess the qualities they wish to project through clothes, and learn how to focus on what works - all in preparation for the ultimate goal: buying the right clothes and dressing on their own. With color illustrations throughout, this series of "private consultations" works as a companion book to the author's popular fashion bibles.

3.0 out of 5 stars This Guide will give you a good workout 12 Jan 2006
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a WORKbook, emphasis on WORK. If you want a "guide" that says clearly "you are this age, shape and colouring so you should wear this style and colour and accessorise it thus", this isn't the book you want. Brenda's book is loaded with workbook exercises to help develop your fashion intelligence and for you to learn how to avoid the dreaded fashion faux pas (the ones in your closet now). You could become so good at identifying the styles that Brenda defines, you could become a fashion guru to others in the fitting room (but you'll have to do all the exercises faithfully for that possibility). Many of the book's exercises are a lot of fun. It is very helpful in helping a person regain their confidence in knowing how to buy clothing. Mostly, you'll be encouraged to get out there now (or as soon as you get to a particular excerise) rather than waiting for that weight loss or big event to force yourself into the fitting room. It IS also very good at identifying and defining your personal style. But if you want to know NOW what to wear, skip the exercises and read the book right through.

5.0 out of 5 stars keep it by you 21 July 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I give this book 5 stars easily, and am surprised the other very good review only gave it 3 stars. This isn't the book for you if you want recommendations for specific numbers and types of garments. What it excels at is making you think about why you may not be dressing well, and changing your perspective on clothes, with lots of suggestions about new things to try. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air 2 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have read many "wardrobe" books and usually manage to find a tip or two. This book is rather different and offers several different approaches to finding your style and moving on from the full wardrobe but nothing to wear syndrome. Yes, it is American and there are pros and cons with that but I can live with that. Some reviewers have mentioned lack of photos but actually I think the quirky drawings add the fun without haveing photos of clothes which would date. This is a book to come back to unlike most wardrobe books which date so quickly. Hurrah for Brenda I say!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy your look ! 1 Aug 2003
By Lee Mellott - Published on Amazon.com
You know what I like about Brenda's books? They make you feel good and celebrate who you are! And Brenda's newest book, "Brenda's Wardrobe Companion: A Guide to Getting Dressed From the Inside out" is no exception.
In the book Brenda acts as your shopping coach. She walks you step by step into the mire of your closet and helps you sort it out so you look and feel good every day.
What do you prefer? A closet choc o'bloc of rarely worn items that have a habit of "disguising, hiding, diminishing and undervaluing you" or a well defined wardrobe that reflects your inner and outer beauty.
You are a gem! And you deserve to look and feel your best. And that's what Brenda promises to help you do in this book.
You begin by identifying what you like. You look at magazines and perhaps clip pictures of the looks that appeal to you.
You use strategies to appreciate your body instead of depreciating your body. Brenda identifies stratiegies to use when shopping to get the look you want. Strategies like, looking for best fit, paying full price when the item is right, dressing for the body you are in not the body you want.
Brenda walks you through a closet streamlining process step by step also. She encourages you to let go of the old that doesn't work (maybe never did ) and bring in fresh appeal.
At the end of the book Brenda helps you pull your look together.
This is a workbook for finally pulling your wardrobe together (and if you have that mastered life is so much easier!)
Brenda really wants to help. She pours her heart and soul into the book to share the best of her knowledge. She wants to make your closet sharp and she wants YOU to feel great about yourself in the process!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very liberating - find yourself!!! 28 April 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I loved this book. I really found it so helpful in helping me to define my own individual style. Now I'm really happy with my wardrobe and actually (shock, horror!) enjoy shopping! This wonderful book also inspired me to redecorate my house and find my own decorating style. It is really helpful, written in a very humorous, loving manner and is very supportive. I have been so inspired I am even considering studying fashion and design at college. It is an inspiring book with lots of really great "hands on" helpful tips and advice and very creative activities!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Self-Help Book for the Wardrobe Challenged 2 Sep 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I was looking for a book to help me discover what colors and styles would best flatter my body. This book covers more of the emotional issues and self-esteem issues that women have in choosing clothes. It's interesting, but more of a "Self-help" book than a practical wardrobe improvement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not to be missed! 22 Jan 2006
By K. Cunningham - Published on Amazon.com
The best book on developing your style that I've come across. It is a style essential. The information and techniques presented are novel, and road-tested by the author in her stylist business. Brenda has a warm & supportive personality, and her book is one you'll reach for again & again. Get this book to find your style, and to re-invent your look as your tastes evolve. Other books focus on creating interchangeable "capsules" (honestly, those books are a bit dated now) but Brenda is concerned with whether you are YOU in your clothes. If you want to copy a magazine spread of "5 Fall Wardrobe Pieces" then buy a magazine and purchase all the clothes. Don't talk to me (or Brenda) if you wear them with a frown 'cos they're not you. If you want to look like yourself: a unique, dynamic person, then get this book and follow through.
