Review

This book contains everything you need to know about mating, whelping and puppy-rearing. Breeding a litter begins with some practical considerations for those thinking of breeding and includes in-depth information about the bitch's anatomy and physiology. Whether your bitch is expecting a litter as part of a carefully planned breeding programme or if she is unexpectedly pregnant, Breeding A Litter is the only book you need. --Veterinary Times

Synopsis

Breeding A Litter begins with some practical considerations for those thinking of breeding and includes in-depth information about the bitch's anatomy and physiology. There is also guidance on choosing the right stud dog, as well as a step-by-step guide to mating. The book continues with expert advice on caring for the pregnant bitch. Whelping is covered in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide, and includes suggestions on what to do if things do not progress as planned. Finally, Breeding A Litter explains how to care for the bitch and the puppies immediately after whelping up to the point when the pups are ready to leave for their new homes. There is a special chapter devoted to the importance of socialization during this period, and advice on how to ensure you can meet these needs. Whether you are facing the unexpected pregnancy of your pet or expecting a litter as part of a carefully planned breeding programme, this book is the only book you need.

I bought this book as a first time breeder having had a small amount of experience in the past. I found that the book was extremely informative taking you through every stage of the process in a clear layout.

The book was a great source to refer to throughout all the different stages particularly when rearing the puppies themselves. As it clearly lays out the developments and actions that need to be performed week by week, I found it was a great way of making sure everything progressed well. I also found the information about using right the whelping box and making general preparations useful too.

I used this book in conjunction with my vets and an experienced breeder. This combination I found was perfect and I'm pleased to say have raised 8 healthy puppies as a result. I'd recommend this book to any first time breeder as it really helps you to realistically see just what breeding entails allowing you to make the best decisions for both you and your dog.

I read the book after getting the Book of the bitch and it contains lot of simmilar information and graphics (same author). It has got some additional information, but I definately would choose Book of the bitch especially for a novice in breeding.

This book was very useful as a novice breeder but there was a lot of information about what could go wrong and ailments the puppies might have, which was a bit worrying. Pups now born and all doing well and whelping was much easier having read the book!

this book contains a mine of information about dog breeding. I like being able to dip in & out of it rather than read cover to cover - more a breeding manual - excellent form of knowledge for me a novice breeder.
