The wide open spaces of the Brecon Beacons National Park cover some 519 square miles (1,344 square kilometres). Ancient red sandstone has weathered to create a succession of crests and valleys that give the highest peaks in south Wales, together with natural as well as man-made lakes, while in the limestone country in the south are spectacular waterfalls, caves and wooded gorges. The Park's wild beauty is accentuated by its proximity to the completely contrasting neighbouring landscape of industrial south-east Wales. A sense of history also plays its part in the Beacons' appeal. The landscape is dotted with, prehistoric monuments, Roman remains, and medieval castles. The Beacons are loved by visitors from near and far who come for the sheer exhilaration of walking unimpeded across vast swathes of open common land, for the green freshness of the landscape, for the watersports, mountain biking, fishing and pony trekking. The Pevensey National Park series of guide books celebrates the beauty and diversity of our National Parks through stunning photographs from some of the finest landscape photographers in Britain, matched with evocative and authoritative text from an acknowledged expert on each Park. The series has the official endorsement and backing of the individual National Park, and the Association of National Park Authorities.
About the Author
Roger Thomas lives near the highest peaks in the Brecon Beacons and has written many books on Wales. He has explored every comer of the National Park. His fascination with the Beacons began at an early age when he cycled from his home in the industrial valleys into the hills and mountains. Roger writes on the countryside, travel and history for publications in the UK and overseas, and is Wales Editor of Fodor's Travel Guides. He is a member of the Outdoor Writers' Guild and the British Guild of Travel Writers. Roger lives in the Usk Valley. Harry Williams has worked extensively all over the UK. Eire and Europe shooting pictures that have appeared in advertising campaigns, books and magazines. He has in-depth knowledge of his native Wales, having photographed it over the last thirty years. Harry lives in Caerphilly.
