Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Brit-nominated Manchester lad Shayne Ward proved himself a real soul talent and a more than capable balladeer with his debut album, Shayne Ward. This second outing, Breathless is something of a surprise, in that it sees the singer take a more assertive stance, swapping the slowies for uptempo disco, dance and electronic R&B. Recorded in Sweden with legendary pop don Max Martin (Britney Spears, N'SYNC, the Backstreet Boys), the album bristles energetically in a way that Ward’s debut didn’t. Recent single "If That’s Okay With You," showcases the upbeat vibe to some extent, but "No U Hang Up" and "Melt the Snow" come with an even more contemporary feel, while "Tell Him" and "U Got Me So" wouldn’t be out of place on a Justin Timberlake album. The reggae groove of "Damaged" works well, as does the album’s key ballad, "Breathless". The only downsides are the bizarrely Wham-esque "Tangled Up" and the boring and mediocre "Stand By Your Side". Largely though, this is a triumphant sophomore album from a real British soul survivor. --Danny McKenna

BBC Review

These days success is often judged less on sales and more on a TV audience's pantomime reactions to unreal situations. Top of this list is the X Factor franchise with its brutal pit fight format of winner takes all - until the next year's winner comes along, of course. After that, you're on your own.

Shayne Ward is at that exact point. Having sold two million copies of his eponymous debut and scored 13 worldwide number ones, he now has the unenviable task of trying to turn that success into a career, starting with this, the 'difficult second album'.

Breathless is an album that sums up the predicament of the reality pop star. Having taken the fast track to the big time, Shayne has no style of his own and is open to the whims of his production team.

That team are the Swedish duo Maratone, who have previously worked with Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson and Backstreet Boys, so there's no doubt that they know pop very well. Sadly, what they don't seem to know is soul. Breathless, for all its ultra-slick production, electro beats and pop hooks, is a superficial and often vapid experience.

The problem is an over-reliance on hip-pop, the watered down and sanitised mainstream runt of the soul music litter, that makes the majority of what is on offer sound like a desperate attempt to jump on the coattails of the latest trend. It's an understandable plan, given the inexplicable success of fellow X Factor alumni Leona Lewis, but it is one that falls far short of success. For instance whoever thought that an aping of Akon on the dire "If That's Ok With You" or the cynical attempt to bring Shayne down to his teenage audience's level with the dreary "No U Hang Up" was a good idea needs their head plunged into a bucket of very cold water.

The exceptions are when Shayne reverts to the formula that made his debut successful, like on the title track ballad, or when the production team actually try something ambitious, as on closer "Tell Him", which swings around a sample of Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

Eventually however the shortcomings of Breathless show us one crucial fact; the old ways of pop are indeed dead, but if this is the future, it might just turn out to be goodbye pop. --Chris Long

Format:Audio CD
i wasnt going to get this album, because i was disapointed with his first album,it was all ballads.but i thought what the heck.anyway glad i did.blown away by this one,i am really enjoying it.full of variety.his voice is very easy to listen to and he tackles different styles really well.
loving the retro 80,s stuff.and the final track Tell Him is a stunner.there are only two tracks that let it down a little, If thats ok with you, which is just weird, and just be good to me.but overall a killer album.

A phenomenal 2nd album from Shayne - totally wicked! Damaged, Breathless and No U Hang Up are all faves. Just be Good To Me will really take you back to the 80's and Shayne has a great version on here! Go Go Go Shayne!

Justin Who? 22 Dec 2007
Format:Audio CD
I have never made a review on amazon before but felt i had to for this. This is one of the best albums i have ever heard. Every song on it is class. Usually with albums you always get about 3 or 4 that are total crap, but not this one. If you like No You Hang Up / If that's ok with you, then you will love the album as they are probably the weakest songs on it. It has a real Justin Timberlake sound to it, so if you like him then you will love this. The last song ('Tell Him') in fact, actually sounds as though it is Justin Timberlake?

Ward's Billing as UK Timberlake Justified on Breathless
Breathless is a refreshing blend of fun pop songs and edgier R&B tracks that wouldn't sound at all out of place on a Justin Timberlake album. Read more

What a talent!
Like many, I wanted Shayne's follow up to be more upbeat than the first. Brill though it was, it didn't show Shayne's versatility. This album has everything. Read more
