4.0 out of 5 stars Raw Power! 20 April 2010
Written, directed, produced and starring Yang Ik-June - that's quite an achievement for any aspiring artist but when your debut is this good, on limited resources; it's nothing short of Breathless. I'm always interested when new talent emerges, especially one that has scooped numerous awards whilst doing the rounds at film festivals. Also, I'm a big admirer of Korean cinema. Breathless has a raw documentary style to its look; due to the budget restrictions and minimal use of camera techniques, but Yang Ik-June has done a remarkable job in bringing this hard drama with strong likeable characters to life. Yang casts himself as the main protagonist, Song-Hoon, but doesn't glorify himself in the lead role; which I found very tasteful.

Song-Hoon is a low life gangster working as a debt collector who isn't afraid to enforce his strong, heavy handed tactics against those unwilling or unable, to pay. He doesn't take any nonsense from anybody, including the law. Walking through an alleyway one afternoon, Song-Hoon spits on the feisty schoolgirl Han-Yoon (an impressive performance from Kim Khot-bi) who retaliates with some strong verbal; leading to Song-Hoon sparking the little madam out cold with one punch to the jaw. But, Song-Hoon has a complex personality, despite being a thug for hire he also takes care of his nephew whilst supporting his sister and father financially, and so he isn't about to leave the vulnerable schoolgirl lying on the pavement defenceless; he waits patiently on the curb for her to recover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harsh, unforgiving, and beautifully poignant 26 Oct 2010
This is not an easy film to recommend. It's harsh and tough to watch sometimes. But it's also incredibly poignant and beautiful. There is a starkness about it that draws you in immediately, characters that are both real and surprising, and violence that is at one moment darkly humorous and in the next moment, not funny at all. It is a solid piece of filmmaking in all aspects. Highly recommended, so long as you can handle watching very realistic interpersonal abuse on screen.
