Very enjoyable! 30 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
I read the first book in this duology a few months ago and while enjoying it, wasn't particularly gripped. With this book however, I was. The main character has developed so much from the angry man of the first book who had no problems with using the people around him for what he could get. I started reading this book and literally didn't put it down until i had finished it. Yes, some of the plot twists were a bit predicatable, and the ending lacked a bit of the drama that had been present throughout the rest of the book but it was still such a satisfying and enjoyable read. I'll definitely be buying other books by this author if this is typical of her writing...

Quirky and unusual 22 Oct 2009
By AnetteF
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have just read 'Breath and Bone' back to back with it's prequel 'Flesh and Spirit' and can honestly say that they were spell-binding. It is hard to write a separate review for this, the second book as the two are so much one single story.

The land of Navronne is still sinking deeper into civil war and it's population is threatened by famine and disease. Valen is now firmly at the centre of events and for better or worse everyone wants to get their hands on him. As he is trying to sort friend from foe, some of the secrets of the past catch up with him and his life takes a turn he did not anticipate in even his wildest dreams.

Risking all to rescue one child, seek justice for another and bring the dying land its rightful king, Valen discovers the glorious , terrible price of the land's redemption - and his own.

This second book was just as riveting as the first and took both, foreseeable and as well as unexpected twists and turns with a great ending. I would like Carol Berg's style to that of Robin Hobb. Quirky and unusual.

An Unlikely Hero. 16 Aug 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Valen is not your usual hero. He is a thief, a self confessed liar, and a drug addict, he also uses people to get what he wants; not the sort of person you would normally look to in a crisis, and yet he does become the hero of this story, and a very satisfying hero indeed. I love the way Carol Berg builds her characters, and the world in which they live. As in the "Rai-Kirah" series, she take unlikely characters, and makes heroes out of them. I love the easy style of her writing, which at the same time is so full of action and drama. I am fast becoming a fan of Carol Berg's writing, and am about to read the "Bridge of D'Arnath" series, and if it is anything like as good as this, and the others I have read, then I am in for a real treat. Keep up the good work, Ms Berg.
