Having a medical background and having read many guides on breastfeeding, attending a workshop and speaking to other mothers I was confident about breastfeeding. However my baby was born six weeks prematurely and required neo natal intensive care nursing. This completely threw all my plans and I had a new set of problems to deal with. Luckily the unit kept a copy of this book and all my questions and worries were addressed within the book. I have never come across such a comprehensive guide with references covering every aspect of breastfeeding. It is very reassuring to know the facts regarding the various studies instead of peoples' hearsay. I would recommend it to any mother who wishes to breastfeed and would like the scientific information as well as practical information in one book.

I have an 8 month old daughter who has been solely breastfed since birth (no bottles). The benefits of this to her (and me) are innumerable but it has not been without its struggles. This book helped me through problems with let-down, biting, nutrition (for me), introducing solids, and with many other issues. I would have had a much more difficult time continuing to breastfeed as long as I have without this indispensable resource and for that I am very grateful. I only wish I had gotten it before giving birth as learning to breastfeed would have been MUCH easier.

For those interested in having a breastfeeding resource, whether a professional or not, this book is a must have. If you need to address a breastfeeding concern, you are more than likely to find it in this book. There are milk storage guidelines, review of the various types of breastpumps, a basic list of medications and their effect on breastfeeding, as well as information on mastitis, engorgement and basic suggestions for making breastfeeding work.
If you work with breastfeeding mothers, or would just like a resource available to you, you must get this book.

This is a great book and should definitely be read during pregnancy. It has been written for the healthcare professional or counsellor but should be read by anyone who wishes to fully understand the process of breastfeeding. I found that breastfeeding is not necessarily straightforward even when everything is going "normally", and this book helped to explain the changes that can occur from day to day and week to week. Even having attended workshops and read the "basic" books I realise, with hindsight, that I had no real grasp of what breastfeeding would be like. My midwife gave me a copy of this book when I had some difficulties after my first son was born but within aweek I'd ordered a copy for myself. I "revised" it before my second son was born and realised that everything it said was true!! If you don't have the support of experienced family members or your healthcare professionals were "bottle-feeders" then it's invaluable to have a resource like this book available. I would urge anyone who wishes to feed their baby to buy this book and read it before their baby is born - although it is a big text, the chapter on the early weeks is essential reading. It is easy to waste money when buying books and equipment etc before your baby is born but this book is worth it's weight in gold.

This book is designed to educate and easily provide specific facts and information to the health professional and lay person who is interested in breastfeeding and finding their way through the process. The Breastfeeding Answer Book really answers all the questions and directs you to the appropriate resources for back up and more information. This is a permanent fixture in my library. The pages are already dog eared.
