I have just purchased this revised edition of this book. I have had this title on my bookshelf over 14 years (previous edition). Over these years I have breastfed all my babies (five of them!)

This book gave me the confidence to feed my first child, it enabled me to handle well meaning, but insensitive comments from family members, but above all, it completely enlightened me with regard to the true benefits of breastfeeding to both mother and baby. Everyone knows 'breast is best', but this book explains exactly why this is so. If you read this book you won't ever want to give your baby anything but breast milk.

The book also contains a useful section that covers breastfeeding when on medication etc or facing an operation for example. This is very useful as there are very few situations where breastfeeding cannot continue. It also gives reassuring information on the baby weight charts that mothers worry about so much.

To summarise, this book is very informative. It explains a lot about how breast milk is absorbed and the need for frequent feeds and so on. It is quite reassurring to breastfeeding mothers, many of whom in today's generation may not have experienced another friend or family member breastfeeding, and so may be lacking in knowledge or confidence.

I only read this book when I was past the most difficult stages of breastfeeding, about 10 weeks, and should have read it before my baby was born. It is excellent: clear and detailed. The particular section I found useful was that on increasing the milk supply, there are loads of tips which really work. As worry about milk supply is a common reason people give up breastfeeding this section is very valuable.

It's a real breastfeeding bible.

I'm a 19 yr old single mum and am currently breasfeeding my 13 month old son.
I brought this book when my little boy was about 3 months old - namely because i was under a lot of pressure to wean. This book is absolutely brillant and provides lots of help for increasing low milk supply (a reason why many mothers stop BF) and gives practical solutions to many problems one encounters. I learnt a lot more about the health benefits for both myself and my son by breastfeeding and this armed me with more confidence to make a stand against early weaning. It also has a section for mothers returning to work.
As a result, my son was exclusively breastfed until a year old. I managed to express each day at work and the book gives lots of tips regarding milk storage.
I still read through the book every now and then - especially since there is a section devoted to feeding the "older" baby. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who needs more support in their decision to BF. I intend to keep it in my home for future reference.
