More About the Author

Penny Stanway is a writer, doctor, artist and cook.

She worked as a doctor in general practice, then in child health. After having her first baby, she realized the usual advice to breastfeed every 4 hours for 10 minutes a side didn't work for her. Research revealed that this advice was based on schedules for bottle-feeding, took no account of how a woman's body works, and meant most women couldn't breastfeed successfully. Her passion to share and explain well-founded, up-to-date information led to her first book, 'Breast is Best' (US - 'The Breastfeeding Bible'). This much-loved guide aims to enable women to breastfeed for as long as they want and is now in its 6th edition

Penny's 27 subsequent books, many on women's health, baby-care and child health, have continued to empower others.

Her 8 most recent books are about 'miracle foods' such as garlic, olive oil, spices and teas. They include 'The Miracle of Honey'.

Penny has also written:
* 'Free Your Inner Artist', on encouraging creativity - and including an account of her feelings and other responses to 3 years of art classes.
* 'Christmas - a Cook's Tour', with Ingeborg Relph, about Christmas food around the world.

I was originally bought this as a gift from my mum when I struggled to establish breastfeeding with my first son. I found it highly useful, full of advice and handy tips in manageable chunks. It was easy to dip into as needed and the advice on increasing milk supply was particularly useful. Having just had my third child and realizing I had leant the book out, I have just purchased a second copy and have not been disappointed - thanks to the "20 Steps to increase your milk supply" we are now feeding successfully.

I was given this book 26 years ago and have since bought 4 more copies to pass on as gifts. Best book ever to help get you on a successful path to breast feeding . If you are serious about breast feeding your baby then buy this book and read it from page to page and keep it handy for reference. Once breast feeding is established it is so much easier than bottle feeding (no bottles to make up, sterilise and carry around with you) . I took a 3 month old baby to Minnorca and fed breast milk exclusively - perfectly simple. Breast feeding is well worth the effort and with this book you have a very good chance of success .

This has stood the test of time, I have bought so many copies for friends I have lost count. It is the best of it's kind, straightforward common sense, reassuring advice and a good read.

Re-reading as a supporting mum-in-law. Full of great advice and information. Found it useful as an expectant mum 27 years ago and now using it to help my daughter-in-law.
