poor 27 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
Breathnach sets the tone on p38 when he tells us about the demise of the English country dance or Ecd. He says they were very popular during the seventeenth century but that they died out and that there was no extant record.

This is tosh. Ecd were first published in Playfords English Dancing Master of 1651. Between 1651 and 1809 some 20,000 were printed. During the 18th century they were danced from the Urals to the Atlantic and from the Arctic Circle to the Mediteranean. Dances they inspired were still being promoted in the 1930s.

He goes on to tell us that jigs are Irish and can be traced to 1674, that hornpipes are English and were imported in the 1760s and that reels are Scots and were imported jn the 1780s. This much is independently verifiable. What follows is not.

This is a good, basic history book of Irish music and dance. 6 Sep 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book covers the history of Irish music fairly well. It is approximately 140 pages. The dancing is covered in a mere two pages, but summarizes the state of dancing in Ireland from the second half of the 18th century through the 20th century.

A Great Concise Read on Irish Traditional Music 11 Dec 2007
By J. holland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Not much to say, except its worth a read to any student of traditional music, let alone Irish traditional music. There are many great books on this subject, but this one can be read in short order, and covers enough material to help direct further study in specific areas, or satisfy a general survey.
