5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Michael Sean on 27 April 2000
Format: Audio CD
With most of the available William S. Burroughs CDs consisting mostly of him reading his novels (often set to music), this excellent disc provides a rare glimpse into the author's earlier 1960s experiments with tape cut-ups. Originally released in 1986, this compilation resurrects many tapes that haven't seen the light of day in a long time, and the inconsistent audio quality often reflects that. The selections display the various techniques used by Burroughs and Brion Gysin, such as cut-ups, 'inching', and the 'drop-in method.' There are also excerpts from a lecture at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, a performance at the ICA in London, and archived recordings courtesy of the University of Kansas libraries. "Sound Piece," "K-9 Was In Combat," and "Silver Smoke of Dreams" were made with Ian Sommerville. Four snippets from a live tape Burroughs made at the 1973 Joujouka Festival in Morocco are also interspersed between the tracks. Although the sound on many of the pieces suffers a bit from the limits and age of the original tapes, the material collected here is priceless. For fans of the man's work this collection is certainly worth getting a hold of.

Format: Audio CD
If you remove the low-fi fragments of music recorded in Morocco ("Jojuka") you have here 11 tracks totaling 38 minutes. Some are the famous Burroughs "routines", dark droll comedy that ended up in several of his early novels. "Burroughs Called the Law" is a classic. Others, like "Origin and Theory of the Tape Cut-Ups" are lecture snippets that shed light on the structural methods he used. Most are examples of the tape experiments themselves, from as early as 1960. These are historical documents of importance to anyone who was unaware that Burroughs worked in audio as well as written cut-up techniques. Unfortunately, this collection is notably inferior to the out-of-print album "Nothing Here Now But The Recordings". Tracks here like "Working with the Popular Forces" are not a patch on the stunning "We See The Future Through The Binoculars Of The People", for example. That superior album was included in its entirety in the Giorno Poetry Systems boxed set "The Best Of William Burroughs", but that is also out of print! Still, try to track down one or the other.

ESSENTIAL DOCUMENT 15 Aug 2005
By Artie Fisk - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is THE recorded document of Burroughs' work with Brion Gysin, and is the ONLY available PRIMARY AUDIO TEXT dealing with CUT-UP THEORY. This set of recordings is best listened to in some temporal proximity to reading Burroughs and Gysin's "The Third Mind," the PRIMARY WRITTEN TEXT of CUT-UP THEORY, and to viewing of the films that Burroughs and Gysin made with Anthony Balch in the early 1960s, "The Cut-Ups," and "Towers Open Fire."

If you are a student of The Beats, and of the Burroughs/Gysin end of the Beats in particular, then this is REQUIRED LISTENING.

If you are a student of the human mind, then this is REQUIRED LISTENING.

If you are a student of art, and are interested in a way to take verbal expression out of its straightjacket, then then this is REQUIRED LISTENING.

Get it. And be enlightened.

This recording is a delightful tour through the right brain of Burroughs. A must have for any punk, artist, or one who appreciates the bizarre creative genius of W.S.B.
Always gritty, always underground. It always puts me in a good mood.

Late night listening for intellectuals. Burroughs was actually very good at reading his own work and drawing in the listener.
