This is a superb course for the advanced learner (you really need to be AT LEAST post GCE level, or have spent a reasonable amount of time living in France). This course is targeted primarily at the self-study learner, but I even found it useful as a backup to my undergraduate studies. There is plenty of conversation and listening practice on the cassettes, and the course covers contemporary subjects such as the environment, health, tourism, French national holidays and the French press. I only have one small quibble in that the grammar covered, although advanced, is quite brief and you would perhaps expect a course of this level to be more thorough. However, I suspect the author has kept grammar to a minimum perhaps in an effort to ensure that the course is 'user-friendly'. All in all a very good course that is well worth the money.

We are using this book in our French class. The book covers interesting topics like holidays, tourism, leisure, newspapers, work etc. After the French text, it provides explanations of certain (difficult) words in English. The book uses dialogue style to encourage speaking/questioning/answering situations. It also has an accompanied CD/cassette which we listen in the class. The dialogues are the normal pitch of speaking in France which means it is rather fast. I wish I have bought the Book & CD set as it is very useful to listen to it again and again to get used to the pronunciation.

The book also covers grammars like conditional tense, subjunctives, prepositions etc. At the back of the book is a glossary of grammatical terms that one can refer to although some might not be covered by this book.

I like this book because it is not dull, give varies expressions and the learning style is simple and easy to follow. If one wants to improve in speaking and listening French as French are I would consider buying the listening material (CD/cassette) as well.
