This series is excellent for taking the learner through from beginning French to quite a high level of fluency is speaking and ease and speed of comprehension. All the topics are well chosen though some seem allied to a particular city. The grammar is secondary to reading and listening but is perfectly adequate. I found the key words and phrases helpful and well-chosen. The tapes are good but there is too much English on them and too many repetitions of quite simple instructions concerning which exercise to do next. But you do finish by speaking and understanding the language with confidence - and it leads on seamlessly to Breakthrough French 3 which I find excellent (and have reviewed in detail as I find it preferable to the Michel Thomas series - and cheaper.) I like to have a book to check on something I have not absorbed fully and/or do some written exercises.

Generally, this course is quite good, but it is best used when it forms the centrepiece of a proper french class; it depends quite heavily on authentic conversations from native speakers, and some of them are spoken very fast with a lot of "distortion" due to local dialect. However, there are several exercises that have no associated transcripts (although they do have answers to questions about the conversation in the exercise). This can be extremely annoying if you are trying to use the book independently by yourself.

The book is in good condition, arrived in good time and is exactly as described,it's a good learning aid in a good format. Listening to authentic French conversations is interesting and much better than litening to a word at a time.
