Product Description

Album Description

• So you think the Shangri-Las were tough and streetwise girls? Well, you ain't heard nothing - The Whyte Boots ‘Nightmare’ takes a ‘Leader Of The Pack’ style scenario to the next level! A girl has been showing off the singer's boyfriend's ring, leading to a vicious catfight in which one of the girls is killed!! Woah! Nightmare…for radio stations fielding the complaints! But in reality, The Whyte Boots did not exist - being a construct of Brill Building hit girls Lori Burton and Pam Sawyer -writers of hits for the likes of The Young Rascals and a slew of Motown acts (and Pam was from Essex too, factoid fans!), they were among the few female writers who produced and arranged their own acts.

• In the wake of having written some chartbusters and the newsworthy scandal over ‘Nightmare’, Mercury decided to give Lori, who had released a few singles along the way (many of them Northern Soul staples today) a shot at an album - BREAKOUT! has a cover showing Lori in biker chick/Cleopatra makeup breaking out (geddit?) of a barrier consisting of a huge Billboard chart.

• But what is it like? Well, from the strains of ‘Nightmare’ to the thundering Northern Soul extravaganza of ‘Gotta Make You Love Me’, what we have here is an explosive collision between Northern Soul and outrageously camp girl-group kitsch that just won't quit, as Lori and Pam give it their all. Lori seeing off all comers in the dramatic soul vocals department! A crazy Mod dancer all the way some would say, pretty darn weird below the surface others would say; but we love it! A classic New York pop-soul stomper of an album. Instant Party? You'd better believe it!

• The complete album, with it's attendant 45s including the radio version of the controversial much banned classic NIGHTMARE! Never before reissued in any form - so never before on CD!

• Exquisitely remastered and sumptuously packaged in the usual Rev-Ola style and with detailed notes supplied by Mr. Mick Patrick - the acclaimed master of girl group history and geography(!) – this is a must for all fans of Northern Soul, Girl Groups, New York Pop, stompin' Mod dancers and the unbelievably camp and strange!!

A lost gem that I can't believe I never knew of; she should've been huge! 1 Nov 2007

Unbelievable. Lori Burton possessed one of the most powerful, lush female voices; she was part of a fairly successful writing and production team with a woman named Pam Sawyer; she WAS The Whyte Boots; and apparently there's a MOVIE based on her and Pam (Grace of My Heart--I gotta check this out). And to think I first heard her on an adult DVD, over a silent loop (with "Love Was") and thought, forget the footage, WHO the hell IS this? After a couple years, a friend of mine nonchalantly told me of a compilation that contained the song AND the name of this mystery singer; a search on Amazon by him (my computer died) discovered a WHOLE ALBUM by this voice once described by him (I played the song for all my friends to see if they could identify it or her) as "a cross between Cher and Lulu".
So, what we have here is an album that should please most any fan of '60's girl groups and singers. The production is truly a "wall of sound" deal (hey, Spector wasn't the only one who could do that--check out The Girlfriends' "My One and Only Jimmy Boy"-- or anything on here for that matter. Spector can go to hell for what he did to Ronnie ALONE). Most of the songs on here are winners, with Love Was, Bye,Bye Charlie, Nightmare, and Only Your Love the definite standouts for me. Not every track hits like these, but the others are growing on me VERY quickly, for the most part (originally I would have only named three songs as standouts--and I've had this CD for less than 12 hours and can't get enough of it). Bye,Bye Charlie is totally infectious, a classic lost to time, and Love Was is just majestic. God, she's so dreamy on the cover, with a voice to match. I'm in love. What a Goddess! And WHAT an ALBUM.
