I bought this book while living in a small Mexican town with a high Gringo population. (There's probably not a higher concentration of Spanish courses and dog-eared study guides anywhere on the face of the planet). This book is far superior, in both readability and depth of insight, to anything that I have ever encountered, whether in Mexico or the United States. But heed my warning: If you make the mistake of loaning this book to friends, you'll never get it back!!!!

This guy is the greatest. If you read this book, and pay attention, you will go from sounding like a gringo to a person who has actually listened to the Spanish language, not just read grammer books. This book best serves folks who've had a least two years of grammer but it's also helpful for those just beginning to avoid some really terrible mistakes that beginners typically make.

In general I like this book, it contains some interesting information about Spanish words/phrases that can be difficult for learners to grasp, BUT why oh why is there no index. The lack of index is such a serious shortcoming. The least the author/publisher can do is put a downloadable index on their website and include an index in the next publication.

El mejor! 25 July 2004

I would give this book 7 stars if possible!

If you are ready to start speaking colloquial Spanish, the way it is really used, rather than the way the text books teach.. then this book is for you.

This book is written by an anglophone, fluent in Spanish (obviously) and directed toward the anglophone student of Spanish who understands the basics, can converse in Spanish basics, but wants to take their abilities to the 'next level.' This book is a must-read (multiple times) that is sure to produce many an 'ah ha!' as the lightbulbs go on. Appropriately titled, this book will help you break out and advance to the next level.

Readers will learn how to avoid the common mistakes generally made by native anglophones speaking Spanish. Also very helpful is a section that explains when to use certain verbs in situations instead of another. There is even a short section on obsenities for those interested.

Your conversational Spanish partners will definitely notice an improvment when you start applying some of the lessons from this book and using all your newly learned colloquialisms.

Quit speaking like a text-book-trained-Gringo and start sounding like a native today!

Want to speak Spanish like a native speaker? If you answered Yes, this book will help get you there. 22 April 2015

I have been studying Spanish for several years in various ways: learn-on-the-go CDs, self-study books, classroom books. This book is one of my favorites because learning the technicalities of a language is good, but this book takes it to the native level AND does so very entertainingly (really appreciate his stories and humor). I feel like I'm having a conversation with a personal coach. This book addresses so many questions and gives such clarifications, such as distinctions and nuances between words. When words have similar meanings, this books gives clear guidance on which word is most closely aligned with the message I want to convey.

The author has a great sense of humor 9 Mar. 2015

I'm trying to improve speaking/reading/writing my very basic Spanish. I ordered this book hoping that it would do just that-break me out of Beginner's Spanish! I've read about 1/4 of the book so far and it's been very helpful. The author has a great sense of humor, which to me, is appreciated. Some days I feel very overwhelmed and feel as though I will never be competent in the language. Reading this book is helping me to feel as though I can and will do this! I've been highlighting my way through and have been making notes. It is very helpful to know how to better communicate for sure!
