5.0 out of 5 stars also for kids with autism 28 Jan 2003
Format:Paperback
My son (6 yrs) has autism. He has been on a gluten & casein free diet for two years. We saw huge improvements. We also saw yeast, parasites and other critters coming back however..., a common phenomenon in the autism world. After implementing this diet (not an easy one), my son's BM's improved immedeately, he has beter eye contact, he suddenly started asking wh-questions (a milestone if I may say so), and last but certainly not least, he has finally gained weight!
So this diet is not only for adults with digestive problems. Nearly 40% of children with autism suffer from intestinal problems (inflammation, diarrea, constipation, parasites, yeast overgrowth, etc).
Before the Nystatin, Diflucan or antibiotics, please consider this miraculous diet. I am from The Netherlands, usually people who do not 'rave' about something. This is different stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars It gave my life back 5 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
After years of suffering from UC and doctors cramming powerful drugs down my gullet this simple diet has given me my life back. I was told by Dr Lemming and friends that UC has nothing to do with diet. So they and some drugs co. just got richer. Symptoms are 90% gone in 6 months with very little medication with the SCD. Some people are going to go for early retirement,....... Doc!

5.0 out of 5 stars It works, it works, it works! 12 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
Take a look at folk that have been advised to go on pils for life by their doctors and ask yourself if they look healthy? I decided that I would skip all doctor-recommended UC pills but the disease did not clear up and then I decided that I would trawl the internet for a cure for the disease. A heavily tattoed biker guy on youtube with no connections to any corporations recommended this book and said that he had been given the all-clear and that he was now free of UC. I bought the book from Amazon and I gradually gave up the illegal foods over a period of two months: it'll take you that long to get to grips with all of the recipes, source your ingredients and generally put the plan into action. You'll have to make SCD-legal muffins etc in advance for the week to snack on! By the time I gave up the last illegal food it was only 48 hours before i had the first non-bloody, non-mucousy "No.2" I had had in over 2.5 years. I was soooooo bloated from all the wind I had from UC (I thought that this was fat) the other pleasant side effect of the SCD diet was that I had to tighten my belt my three notches when the bloating completely disappeared almost overnight and now none of the pants that fitted me then fit me anymore: I've dropped 2" off of my waist without losing a pound within the first month. Lookin' trim as I was when I was a teenager, no wind, regular bowel movements which now only occur once a day. I feel like a million dollars. The feeling of being well is just as profound as the feeling of being well again after recovering from the flu or a bad cold: you really really appreciate it. The book mentions supporting websites and these fill in any advice gaps not covered by the book - such as what booze (if any) was legal etc.

Thankyou Elaine Gottschall where ever you are.

Breaking the Vicious Cycle is a must read for anyone with Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative
Colitis, Diverticulitis, Celiac Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, and Chronic Diarrhea. Even if you do not
follow her plan, it is simply a book which is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Elaine
Gottschall's daughter had Crohn's Disease at a young age. She is now fine. The diet is one which
has no di or polysaccharides. Though this diet is tough, it seems to be right on the mark. The
concept is to starve anaerobic bacteria residing in the intestinal tract. It is quite interesting that
antibiotics are now being used more prevalently and effectively in the treatment of Crohn's,
Stomach Ulcers, and other digestive problems. Her approach is simply a healthier, cleaner one
which focuses solely on diet.

My husband was diagnosed with an extremely severe case of colitis then Crohn's disease. All that his doctors were doing were prescribing higher and higher doses of drugs (sulfasalazine, prednisone, etc) which were making him sick and caused him to drop pounds daily. Then we heard about Elaine Gottschall's book. It has literally been a life saver!!! The author provides both an explanation for the diet and a simple guide of "do eat" and "don't eat" foods in list form. My husband felt like he had his symptoms under control within two days! He was able to stop taking his medications with no complications. At last, no more stomachaches. After two years of being on this diet, my husband has shown remarkable improvement after follow up tests. However, don't expect your doctors to support this diet, they don't want to give up their hold on prescribing expensive prescription drugs! Even more unbelievable, the specialists we've seen are completely ignorant of this book! Incredible. This diet is completely natural and relatively easy to follow, especially considering the alternatives! Buy this book for yourself or for your loved one who suffers from this disease. It can change lives. We cannot thank Elaine Gottschall enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't give up, help is at hand 16 Nov 2011

Format:Paperback
This is a well-written book on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, a milder version of the low starch diet. Do not buy the book if you are not willing to commit to this diet, as it offers no simple solutions. Very limited intake of starch, disaccharides and polysaccharides are banned, so are soya and dairy products, chocolate, processed foods...It is no simple task to implement such a diet in western societies, so many changes are needed, be ready to invest in flasks/tupperwares: planning is key to succeeding. The diet is backed up by research, and accessible to most readers, however a little knowledge in medecine is preferable. Having said that, if like me your digestive tract has always been problematic, then you too would have done extensive research on the digestive system, so the language should not be a problem. I have yet to abide 100% by the diet, but I am working towards that goal. A food diary is helpful. I do not regret purchasing this book, it comes with tasty recipes too, a bonus - for all that, I am grateful for Elaine Gotschall's work.
