Product Description

Product Description

Breaking the Spell arose from Rachael's own journey of recovery from low self-esteem as well as many years of working as a counsellor and therapist. She shares techniques she developed to help herself and which have proven highly successful with her clients. It draws on a variety of approaches;- cognitive behavioural methods, Twelve-Step recovery work, spiritual and creative techniques.

Breaking the Spell aims to put its ideas across in a direct and accessible manner. Rachael has worked in a variety of settings, including addiction recovery and GP surgeries and has had to find the language to meet the needs of a wide range of people, with differing degrees of life experience, and awareness.

By sharing her own experience, Breaking the Spell has a sense of equality and aliveness as well as depth. It explains how self-esteem operates and offers ways of breaking destructive behaviour patterns. Each chapter contains creative activities for developing a healthier and more loving sense of self.

From the Author

This book has its own unique angle on a popular topic and aims to put its ideas across in a direct and accessible manner. Breaking the Spell is about understanding how self-esteem operates. It seeks to uncover the systems of negative and punitive thinking and behaviour, by which we maintain low self-esteem. It offers ways of breaking these destructive behaviour patterns and provides suggestions for creating a healthier and more loving sense of self. I believe that when we learn to stop hating ourselves, what has to replace it is Love.... Each chapter builds the journey, step by step, from low self-esteem to a sense of self worth that can be consolidated and can thrive. The chapters contain exercises for you to use and suggestions for rewarding yourself for having reached the end of the chapter. It is up to you whether or not you do the exercises, some people like to have things to do, others just like to read and take in the ideas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical and easy to use advice 23 Feb 2005
Format:Paperback
Rachel's book is easy to read and understand and everyone who reads it will identify with at least one of character traits that Rachel discusses. Of particular significance to me was learning to label thoughts and allow only the positive ones to take up my time. I very quickly felt a distinct improvement in my wellbeing and would recommend Breaking the Spell to anyone who suffers from low self-esteem.

Like other reviewers, I found Rachel's book to be an approachable and encouraging read. Her sensitivity to the rhythm and sound of language
makes even the prose passages pleasurable and easy to read. Rachel's
perceptive descriptions and no-nonsense analysis of the issues attending
low self-esteem enabled me to identify the particular character of my own
concerns, but also re-assured me that I was not alone, something that was
itself a great comfort. This book can enable a reader to learn about,
acknowledge and tackle in a practical way some potentially very
distressing and often deeply entrenched ways of thinking, all under the
guidance of a very safe pair of hands.

Reviewer: Reader & therapist from Birmingham UK.
Summary: A lovely, well laid out & empowering book.
A wonderful book, it helped me tremendously both personally & professionally. It is written in an accessable style with plenty of exercises for the reader to work through together with personal experiences from the author ( which are very normalising). The book could be used as either a self help or therapist resource.
