I bought this book last year, after 15 yrs of utter suffering from acne. I am 35, female, and have pretty much been suffering from spots since my late teens. I have tried every product on the market, including prescription stuff, and Accutane when I was 21 which was wonderful (albeit risky), but it all came back a few years later. I was tired of my GP's laidback and clueless attitude ("it will go away", "cut down on fatty food or chocolate"). Some dermatologists didn't seem much more informed, and generally left me with raw sensitive skin AND still breakouts.

So, I decided it was time I educate myself and learned what I could do, since no-one else seemed to have the answers I was looking for. I read this book in one sitting and I can honestly say it has totally changed my outlook on acne, and helped me come up with a routine that suits me. As an acne sufferer herself, the author fully understands the psychological impact of acne, how devastating "a few spots" can feel, how you want to hide and not show your face in public ever again. She also thoroughly researched what exactly happens to the skin when we get flares, and explains this in simple but effective terms. The author also investigated every single topical or oral treatment, and obviously spoke at length to several key dermatologists and acne specialists. You will read information on sulfur, all antibiotics, accutane/roaccutane, retinol and Vit A, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, AHA's, salicylic acid etc etc, helping you create a routine that is relevant to your lifestyle, skin sensibility etc. She doesn't rule out anything, there are pros and cons to each product, but this will not leave you confused: you will pretty much decide what to retain from this list very quickly, since you know your skin better than anyone.

I've read many pieces of information in relation to acne however none anywhere near as detailed, informative and explanitory as this one! I've learned so much more info about over the counter products, prescription products, specific ingredients, how to use most effectively, and after 10 yrs of suffering from acne, trying loads of products and thinking I knew most of what there was to know about it along comes this book and gives me exactly the knowledge I was looking for.

What if we could be given the time to sit with and interview the top dermatologists and acne experts in the world, scientists, cosmetic surgeons, specialsists on scarring and cosmetic chemistry, and ask all the questions we've always wondered? instead of the rushed 10 mins in and out of GP's/dermatologist surgeries. Well, this writer has done this along with spending many yrs researching through text books and medical journals.

So far I've only read around a fifth of this book since I bought it this week but I can't put it down, and already I've found the contents so useful.

Like I say a MUST Have read for all those with acne who've had enough!

Breaking Out is a concise, easy, informative read. However, after many years of coping with "low grade" acne (I am now 53 and it is still ongoing)there was nothing new in this book that I hadn't read many times over before. Basically the advice is always the same, clean skin thoroughly (with nothing too harsh) and make sure you use a product containing benzoyl peroxide and perhaps add a salicylic acid or glycolic acid product to your regime when you can. For anything termed chronic acne, medication with Roaccutane is the only possible solution. There isnt really any other. I once read that Dermatologists love dealing with acne patients as the patients never die and never get better!! All these years later I can absolutely understand why!! If you are "new" to acne or have never searched for a solution or understanding of the problems encountered when living with acne, do read this book, it is helpful to understand the condition but if like me, it is an ongiong, long term affliction you can learn from it how to make acne as insignificant as possible in your life. However, do not expect miracles!

I have puposely left a few months before writing a review as I wanted to be sure of the results. I have seen amazing results.

I have suffered from acne since I was 15, and as a result went on Dianette and subsequently Yasmin to control it. I am now 35 and have only come off the pill once for 6 months in that time and my acne came back worse than ever when I was 28. My husband and I decided to start a family and the thing I most feared was coming off of the pill and the return of my acne, this almost stopped us having children (unless you have had acne, you could not possibly understand how ruins your life)

I found this book and read the reviews and thought i would give it a go, not holding out any hope. The book is mainly for the american market, and the product suggestions out of date and not applicable in the uk, however the info was comprehensive and invaluable. Together with my fabulous doctor and armed with this book we found the exact salycilic acid cleanser product with the correct ph (acnisal 2%) and the correct benzoyl peroxide gel (panoxyl 2.5%) used them as specifically described leaving the cleanser on for a few minutes, and leaving at least 30 mins between that and the gel, and 4 months later have not had a single zit.

In the beginning my face was so sore, but after a couple of weeks the rash and soreness went never to return and now I only use the products every other day, and my skin is perfect(warning: apart from an incident when I accidently forgot to wash off the cleanser and had a red itchy beard/rash for a week!! dont do this)

This book is amazing, I totally recommend it, read it and follow it to the letter, dont be tempted to start on a higher %, and see for yourself. I have since purchased it for a friend, and it is helping her now.

Best buy of my life. Fact.
