Finally, a book about de Bono that REALLY cuts the custard!! Not so much the biography of the man as a fantastic and informative book ABOUT de Bono with a generous amount of biographical detail thrown in. This has made a rather messy and wide-ranging read which, strangely enough is quite appropriate to the subject matter. In fact, to relate the story of the getting of the ideas let loose on the world by this human powerhouse is the only way to go; anyone wanting a reasonably good "perv" into the private life of perhaps the world's most private individual will not really get all the juice and flavour they are after.
For me, the highlight of this book has been the tracing of the impact of everything de Bono on the world. We are, all of us, dimly aware of the importance of lateral thinking but perhaps less aware of "Parallel Thinking" - de Bono's boldest and most revolutionary mental software to date.
Dudgeon has also traced the incredible success of CoRT, de Bono's schools programme which has survived a trial period of nearly 30 years and is still as potent now as ever.
The wealth of names, places and institutions which play a part in this story are hard to hold in the mind as you read, and only a vaguely chronological approach is adopted, but, anyone who is familiar with the ideas knows that "You sometimes need to travel South in order to continue travelling North." If you start the book with the idea that this life is something of an enormous mosaic where the pieces fall into place in somewhat random order, the final picture is actually quite complete and inspiring. Overall, I feel strongly that Dudgeon has done about as well as one would do. Anyone wanting to know just how successful de Bono's ideas have been in helping the world to become a better place will find an extraordinary richness in this book.
